I follow a Camino de Santiago forum, and every day I see threads from women who speak of being harassed, stalked, and worse, on the trail. It's heartbreaking to know the same thing that was such a wonderful experience for myself and others would also be so fraught for women.

Anyway I don't want to be accused of starting drama. I don't want to be assaulted, and I don't want to be a problem! So I leave and the men assume I'm tired or dull or maybe they don't care bc without me, they don't have to confront the creeps, they can claim ignorance and buy the bar another round.

The good men, the friends and lovers even, say to me later "well why didn't you just tell that creep off" as though I wouldn't be accused of starting shit, as though they'd stand up for me and not interrogate me to make the creep comfortable instead. Experience tells me most men will do the latter.

The next day I hear about what happened later, the wild experiences, strengthened bonds or odd opportunities all of which I would have loved to have been part of! But I left, bc for me, leaving was the smart choice, the safe one. But saying why I left makes the men roll their eyes; nothing happened!

It happens so often it can be hard to even see. Men having the same experience I am, but I hit a place where the attention becomes unpleasant. Inuendos start. I have to wiggle out of something I did not start (cautiously! trying not to upset any dangerous egos!) so I leave, while the men get to stay

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

A truly heinous man has doxxed the Cornell victim on X and the comments are predictably vile. Based on countless interviews I’ve done with survivors, the trauma they are subjected to for coming forward is oftentimes even worse than the initial trauma they experienced. There is no real justice system

Women chose the bear. They warned us of the dangers they face every day. Instead of listening, men mocked them. Step in on that crap & shut it down whether it's in a public place, a friend's party, work, or in the comments. Silence is acceptance. Go be a man.

Be an ally to the organizations that support victims of assault & domestic violence. Google the near you & make the calls. You're there to help, not take over. They know the battlefield. Learn from them. Stack inventory at the thrift store or help with a fundraiser.

Women rightfully view men as potential assailants. Men must as well & then have the courage to intervene. Not just against real time violence. Throwing a punch is easy. Call out your boys when they're being misogynistic. Unchecked words can lead to actions. Silence is acceptance. Speak up.

Times have changed and it's much more difficult to cover up these crimes like Ohio State did. Kudos to the Cornell Daily Sun and their student journalists for refusing to let the story go, despite the indifference from administrators and authorities. I've no doubt they got flak and threats.

Within weeks some rich donors paid off the victim, and set her up at a different university. She stayed silent. Who could blame her? I hope she was able to deal with the trauma and forge a happy life. And that was NOT the only such crime during my time at The Lantern, merely the worst one.

Having Big Ten athletes involved added to intensity of the cover up. The university gave us no information at all. It didn't even admit a rape had happened! Just "an incident." All the bros in the dorm clammed up, too. All we had was rumors and hearsay. We couldn't print a substantive story.

At that time, the Ohio State Campus was it's own municipality. Campus cops "investigated" the crime. Everything was hidden behind student privacy laws. We couldn't even get documentation about the crime, or the perpetrators, nothing. A wall of silence.

When I was working at The Lantern, there was a similar gang rape. In a dorm, involving several athletes. Floor party. Heavy drinking. A shitfaced woman was into it at first, then wanted to stop. It didn't. Guys lined up. We caught wind of it at The Lantern. The university stonewalled.
