Dealing with pay ‘as a priority’ is a small olive branch - the unions had previously said they wanted pay to be addressed first and foremost, which Chambers had labelled as a ‘precondition’ which he was not prepared to agree to in advance of full discussions getting underway

A valid skeptical view is this is just putting an AI spin on a post-bankruptcy restructuring.

A week ago, I shared an opinion that it’s structurally impossible for a company to identify its high performers who get more done with AI then layoff everyone else. Bird’s CEO seems to be arguing they did just that with 88% layoffs (1,000 ->120) and focus on high agency full stack workers using AI.

‘Protect the Dolls’ is a term meaning ‘take care of trans ppl’. Its origin is due to the campaign of persecution & violence aimed at this vulnerable part of the Gay community. LGBTQ ppl nationally, & internationally, have been flagging that UK state TV is actively transphobic, for years. More proof!

Why would we let Anthropic decide this for us? If you ascribe to a moral philosophy or religion that disavows being mean to a toaster, that is fine. It is not however fine for a tech company to make, functionally, a moral law for a talking word toaster that is promised to rule us one day.

a chart from Prison Policy comparing states' incarceration rates of women to the other countries' rates.
it shows about 20 states who incarcerate women at a higher rate than even the most incarceration-friendly countries (el salvador, dem. rep. of congo, thailand). three states - south dakota, montana and idaho - incarcerate women at a higher rate than the country of El Salvador.
