Please take the time to read this post from The Sameer Projects's Mass Displacement Response Campaign & reach out w/ campaign suggestions to meet any of their goals (ie. the $51,950 rent goal; or $35,222 for electric supply). It's vital we support this effort. chuffed.org/project/1491...

The Sameer Project: Mass Displacement Response Campaign
We are witnessing a historically tragic, a historically cruel, a historically criminal, moment that is enabling the ETHNIC CLEANSING of Palestinians from the North of Gaza. It has been 77 year since the Nakba - the “catastrophe” - that led to the dismantling of Palestine, the dispossession of land, the theft of property, and the attempted fracture of the Palestinian identity by zionist forces. The images are similar, hoards of people forced to flee under threat, in duress, with no where to go. But today the reality is even more dire as airstrikes and quadcopter rain terror on a tired, starved, and depleted population. The North is being leveled, with one objective in mind - expanded occupation, total takeover. ETHNIC CLEANSING.

what does this mean
to see walking men
wrapped in the color of death,
to hear from their tongues

are they the spirits

who will believe the red road
will not run on forever?
who will believe
a tribe of ice might live
and we might not?

Today @sealeychallenge.bsky.social Day20 Im exploring visual poetry. I chose Lost Sonnets by the late Catherine Vidler @timglaseteditions.bsky.social (2018) & @guillemotpress.bsky.social collaboration/conversation Lens Flare by @derekbeaulieu.bsky.social & Rhys Farrell. @openpoetrybooks.bsky.social
Purple swirling abstract wave-shapes form the cover of Lens Flare by Derek Beaulieu & Rhys Farrell (2021) from experimental Guillemot Press.Farrell reconfigured Beaulieu's 2009 Aperture project from Penteract Press, where the poet experimented with pre-computer era dry-transfer lettering, which tends to decay, crack and deconstruct over time. Farrell's brilliance is a call-response poet-to-poet digital reimagining of the already deconstructing earlier technology's transformations, adding brilliant layers of bright pop neon hues to create provocative visual tone poems with arresting movement and visionary dreamscape movement. Rectangular cover of Catherine Vidler's Lost Sonnets. Stark, minimalist pale blue lines with arrows in diagonal patterns close together like a weave, arrows moving to the right bottom. (2018) Timglaset Press.Vidler used the Paint program connected to Microsoft Word; in particular, the insert shapes function. I love these pieces with their wide variety of both simple and more complex iteration. As above, the overall technique was to cut and paste endless variations of black and white, blue, and black/red geometric shapes of different type, in effect using 'found' materials "to start" yet manipulating and altering the shapes with the rotate tool, a both precise and intuitive compositional process. She also used other tools such as Microsoft "callout" to envision 'wordless' yet potent modern sonnet hallucinations that are visual representations of the compact expressive 'essay' of the sonnet form still favored by text-based poets, Sonnets today are created in both traditional and elaborated individual new designs. As I make both text based and visual works, I deeply appreciate the hybridity of the experimental artists who work either in purely visual or visual/text formats, and through exploration and expansion of their text based production, see visual works/ or hybrid/ as the significant poetic/art practices they are, simple, diverse, complex.

A brilliant epic collection of poetic voices by Tyehimba Jess reconstructing the life of leadbelly from childhood to death songcraft, visions, prison farm letters, folk blues,"Lomax", NYC, music; wife martha, visceral ghosts emanate! @sealeychallenge.bsky.social #day14 @openpoetrybooks.bsky.social
photo of cover leadbelly by Tyehimba Jess (2005) Verse Press. Drawing of ledbelly's hands on his 12 string guitar. Winner of National Poetry Series.July, 1933: leadbelly receives lomax at angola prison
(excerpt)
the ghost of a traveler comes to my cell, carrying machinery of wire
and coil, needle stuck into spinning plate of oil, tells me that this
machine will stitch my stories into its black tar grooves if i hoist all i
know of caddo, fannin street, the .32 and black women's hands, hurl it
into song. he wants the aphrodisiac of a hundred thousand slave songs
running fevers through my chorus, he wants the secret of cockwalk
in the chords.

with two months left in my sentence, i twist the 12 screws that line
stella's head so i can howl in double dropped D, this key that lemon
always said unlocks the grave's trapdoor and drags the devil up from
his harem to shiver between the strings.martha: vigil (Excerpt)

til' fever's run col, til' the last breath's gone
i'll stand here wiping down his brow.
a few more hours till we see the dawn
together, such a small, bright thing, right now

it's the one gift we got left. no more high
songs or low blues. them hands can't hold guitar
keep a beat, that red river voice 'bout dried
to its rocky bed, my lead: look how far

we been, baby. ook how far we come, yes.

#SealeyChallenge 13/31 Goblin Market & Other Poems by Christina Rossetti🍍🍇🍑A poet haunted by spring: she sees the ends in every new/fresh thing (& in everything), yet depicts bounty in splendiferous detail. Cover art is “Brothers and Sisters,” a painting by Jeff Koegel: even, vertical stripes of different, mostly earth-tone colors on khaki background look sort of like 3/4 of a flag.
In the top left cut-out quadrant, large raised lettering reads

In small white typewriter-font, running sideways down the 2nd vertical (gray) stripe from the right:

For #Sealey15 @sealeychallenge.bsky.social & @openpoetrybooks.bsky.social Today US poet Regine Ebner's meditative poems of the Sonora Desert. Short quiet poems explore nature, time, self, memory, loss & change, a prismatic of life in a desert ecosystem. Beautiful work. @blackboughpoetry.bsky.social
Cover of "Mountains that See in the Dark" by Regine Ebner from Black Bough Books (2025). Vivid tomato colour book with a painting of mountain, desert and sky by Maynard Dixon.A Swift Orphan Wind

She reminded me of an orphan
after her house exploded,
and all the doors and debris washed down the river,
diaries and skates,
dolls and radios,
memories of coming home in a cold winter fog,
all those autumns with tender leaves.

And everyone offered her donuts
for some reason,
not able to say the word 'Mother',

except in the cracked silences
 of the old stone house,

still holding on to the river,
still standing in the swift orphan wind.High Grasses

We walk the high grasses
in afterthoughts and luster,
shaking off the light from daybreak.

From cottonwoods and miracles,
a dreamscape of madness and beauty.

I find you in the leaves,
gathering the fleece of spiderwebs
and the yes before morning.

As we walk back the dusty hills,
counting pearls.Missions and Split-Rail Fences

The old mesquite chapel,
just down the road,
fades into the masks of history.

The candles have all burnt down to the tin,
buried under leaves and voices.

Sunlight seeps through the sawdust beams,
alive only with beetles and prayer.
Hawks fly overhead, pious and swift,
still waiting for their vesper bell,
in the sawmill scent of old mesquite.

I am here by the door
with its iron-heavy cross,
knowing the words to the hymn,

I'll leave by the glint of the last sundown
and walk where the lizards can find me.

#SealeyChallenge 11/31 If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho translated by Anne Carson📜🏺I really did read all of the poetry in this book on Monday, but then I got to the notes & they were just as fascinating (& added another hour+) & quirky? I ♥️ Carson’s tone & whole approach. Eg, She includes a resonant letter from Emily Dickinson(!) to Sue in a note on Sappho’s Fr 96… Then, the start of school-year schedule snuck up on me. Now I’m behind again. I read some Sappho last Sealey Challenge (or the year before?) but Carson’s Sappho is sooo much better.🙏🏻sponsor me (under name: dianalogbooks) or donate direct to #FeedGaza — links in bio or via @openpoetrybooks#TheSealeyChallenge2025#TheSealeyChallenge #31BooksIn31Days #31BooksInAugust #poetry {Image 1 description}[book sits on blue velvet couch]Cover is mostly white, w/an image of degraded brown-gold papyrus, with black lettering on it, running down the majority of the spine. For @sealeychallenge.bsky.social Day #11 The Brush (2024) by Eliana Hernandez-Pachon, Columbian poet. A striking narrative long poem, documenting a rural atrocity through different POV: witnesses, investigators, victims & nature itself. @archipelagobooks.bsky.social @openpoetrybooks.bsky.social
Cover of The Brush by Eliana Hernandez-Pachon trans from Spanish by Robin Myers.
Orange cover with a coal black abstract art work with orange flames/petals and white thin chains (as roots) by Cecilia Vicuna.
A beautiful edition of this work by always remarkable Archipelago BooksThe Witnesses resume:

If we add the fact that the night entered the houses with
them, the night came and went as it pleased, extending its
dark sky as skin is stretched, as God covered the body of
the animals with hides, if we may borrow that image, which
is to say, enveloping it all, if you add the fact of the night in
all its vastness and envelopment, you might come up with
an idea.The Brush continues:

When the bodies collapse in the town square,
picked out at random,
the houses are left behind with their yards,
their kitchens, their sheets pressed smooth,
receiving, still,
the sun's warm touch.
Things are left with their layers
creased into each other,
asking why,
this,
now,
things don't think before speaking,
they charge ahead
like old trains
derailing.
