7-8PM UK time, I’m giving this Keynote Performance for Lancaster Uni’s conference ‘Animals in Translation: AI, Ethics and the Future of Interspecies Dialogue’. It’s also an AV translation of an original artwork I was commissioned to make. #xl8 🌊 Conf livestream links: wp.lancs.ac.uk/animalsintra...
Text says: ‘On Oceanic Terms, On Memory’s Conditions

In the near-future, an unforeseen incident with profound consequences for the future of life on Earth occurs in the Indian Ocean. Inciting circumstances involve a family of blue whales and a group of billionaires invested in the proliferation of artificial intelligence. What if a stenographer from the Court of the Global Majority, herself raised underwater and a key witness, were to relay details of the happening—now known in English as the Mass Marine Linguistic Event—to an audience of translators whose work has been intrinsically tied to its creation?’

"Lamine Yamal waved a Palestinian flag from the top of a bus during Barcelona’s La Liga title parade in May…[Prime Minister Pedro] Sánchez defended him publicly. Javier Bardem took a Palestinian flag handed to him by a fan in the stands during Spain’s match against France & held it up on camera."
Existence is resistance, he said. Spain stands with Palestine. None of that is incidental to who Spain is right now, as a team and a country. It’s the most visible thing about them to a lot of the world watching.

That’s why, by the time the final kicked off, people in Gaza City were already picking a side, and it had nothing to do with who had the better midfield. They said so directly, to reporters, over the sound of a war still going on around them. They were with Spain because Spain had stood with them. A government can’t buy that kind of allegiance with a phone call to an ambassador. A team earns it by making a choice in public, when it costs something to make it.
