My running joke is the smartest people I know are from Ohio. They woke up one morning, realized they were in Ohio, and promptly left Ohio.

This isn’t mere philanthropy for tax write-offs or reputation banishing. One could achieve those objectives by funding something that doesn’t involve AI or any other for of targeting. This is how charitable foundations led by CEOs disseminate their ideologies and shift public sentiment.

To be clear I do not yearn for the days before social media. It was very difficult to move info. That helped a lot of bad things go under the radar. I'm just saying... it's ok to log off sometimes.

Hot take: I don't think social media made people dumber. We've been dumb this whole time. It's just that you used to have to have a job that people sent their dumb letters to, to notice. This made "Engaging with fools" an occupational hazard rather than the 24/7 experience it is presently.

Heard snippets of it when the radio program was talking about people who haven't heard it, I don't remember them. I also do not know any Taylor Swift songs so maybe we're the wrong demographic?

Every time I see Ted Cruz trying to use a Senate hearing to prosecute a witness, I’m reminded that he still uses all the tricks of being a policy debater to try box in his opponent—and those tricks are explicitly designed to show off rhetorical fluency as a substitute for fact-finding.

Also, don't sleep on local races. It's a long ballot, but your life will usually be more affected by the names at the bottom than the ones at the top. (This last has special urgency here, since the Corpus Christi mayor and city council have utterly failed to secure our supply of drinking water.)

Nor are foreign students and postdocs coming to the US for education. It's a double edge sword, we're losing the finished product (professors) and the raw material (students and postdocs).

There are so many problems with literary culture and the publishing industry today. Bret Stephens has the unique ability to write an entire column that touches on none of them. It's like watching a guy stumble through a rainstorm without ever getting wet.

First, Congratulations! Yes, 15 days is very fast. However, insanity is measured on a spectrum as we are all a bit insane, so how insane are you is the correct diagnosis. There's always Reinhold insane, he got to Whitney and turned around and walked back to Yosemite. I met him on his return trip.

Humans aren’t good at thinking about things that do complicated stuff without intentions or consciousness. That was very tricky when writing about evolution for kids. Stuff just happens, and all the happenings accumulate over time! There’s no purpose, no direction, no design—just outcomes

A bit OT but I will never forget Colm Meany in "Moon for the Misbegotten." I saw a great deal of Broadway in those days, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Patrick Stewart, Al Pacino, but Colm's performance was the most impactful.
