avery @onefinemayday.bsky.social · 03/09/2026The reason I don't have a picture with Gloria Steinem is that when she spoke at Smith when I was a student I was embarrassed not to have already known much about her, so when my friend asked me to take a picture of them with her, I didn't ask for one myself. RIP girl, I'll stop being a dummy one day 020

avery @onefinemayday.bsky.social · 19/08/2026I've decided I need to read the Agatha Christie novel "Why Didn't They Ask Evans?" because the title drives me crazy. Who is Evans? Who are "they"? What should they have asked Evans? Why is Evans the person they should have asked? One question leads to another and I can't live like this anymore. 000
avery @onefinemayday.bsky.social · 12/08/2026Just preordered this from my local bookstore - as someone who happily lives single I'm always excited for cookbooks that suit that lifestyle, and I've never made breads before so this will be a fun new adventure! Happy almost publishing day! 221

avery @onefinemayday.bsky.social · 08/08/2026I can’t see images of the two leads in One Night Only without thinking of that time Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran were on stage together and her outfit was doing the most and his outfit was giving us nothing 171
avery @onefinemayday.bsky.social · 16/07/2026As a huge Simon & Garfunkel fan, watching this was a bizarre experience; as a huge Wes Anderson fan, I was obsessed with all the direct address to camera shots; as a huge gay subtext fan, I tried not to impose homoeroticism on this but I simply did not have to as Mike served it to me on a platter 000
avery @onefinemayday.bsky.social · 15/07/2026Took a chance and got the Criterion edition for the next in his filmography sight unseen and now having watched it, I have no regrets. I kind of want to eat this film 100

avery @onefinemayday.bsky.social · 08/07/2026In back to back years in high school student theatre I played roles which were also played by Buck Henry (Messenger 7013 in Heaven Can Wait) and Marty Balsam (Juror #1 in 12 Angry Men) in film adaptations of those plays. Did anyone in this cast also play Nym in the Merry Wives of Windsor? Surely! 100
avery @onefinemayday.bsky.social · 08/07/2026And I started the tv series when it came out but never finished it. This one though, a cavalcade of stars! At one point (several points, ofc) Marty Balsam and Buck Henry were onscreen at the same time and it occurred to me that I have another ✨specious personal connection to a Mike Nichols film✨ 100

avery @onefinemayday.bsky.social · 13/06/2026Only knowing later that Carly Simon wrote the song for Nichols’s film Working Girl, which Letterboxd says I watched on July 6, 2016 (a few months after moving to the city) and gave it only three out of five stars - which is a bit low coming from me! I’ll give it a rewatch when we get there 110
avery @onefinemayday.bsky.social · 13/06/2026Anyway I could go on but the work of Mike Nichols in particular has quietly followed me around my whole life and I didn’t even know - I sang along to Let the River Run in my mom’s car as a little kid, and then played it on my phone on the train into New York on my way to job interviews to hype me up 110
avery @onefinemayday.bsky.social · 13/06/2026I bought my DVD copy of the film at the mall the day after we lost Robin Williams. It’s the film’s 30th anniversary this year and I’m hoping to see it in theaters this pride month! In April I spent my birthday at Miami Beach and made a pilgrimage to the Carlyle Hotel, where the exteriors were shot. 100
avery @onefinemayday.bsky.social · 13/06/2026The Birdcage has been one of my favorite movies since I was a little kid, even before I really understood what was going on (i.e., that anyone was gay) - we would always be eating dinner in front of the tv and find it playing on TNT or something already partway through, right around the dinner scene 100
avery @onefinemayday.bsky.social · 13/06/2026And where were the film’s external scenes shot? Smith College, of course! According to Harris’s book, the campus was recommended to Nichols by his then girlfriend Gloria Steinem, my fellow Smith alum. I met her once at a talk on campus but was too bashful to get a photo, tho I took one for a friend. 100
avery @onefinemayday.bsky.social · 13/06/2026Also at Smith, possibly in the same year, I took a class on British and American Drama, where we read Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and watched the film. The DVD pictured above actually belonged to my professor and I inadvertently stole it by forgetting to give it back. Sorry professor! 110
avery @onefinemayday.bsky.social · 13/06/2026I’ve seen the film before of course, with the first time possibly having been for my American Popular Culture class at Smith College, where we were assigned Harris’s book Pictures at a Revolution, about the 1967 Best Picture Oscar Nominees, a book that I absolutely loved, so full circle moment 100
