Culture versus climate: how global heating endangers Unesco heritage sites
Unesco World Heritage sites in France and around the world are under threat from the climate crisis. From ancient cities to medieval abbeys, floods, droughts, rising seas and wildfires are putting humanity’s most precious cultural heritage at risk.

Eels' slipperiness is the basis for the some of our oldest eel metaphors. In the 5th C. BCE, the Greek poet Simonides wrote that a slippery character -- say, like, a politician who is running for office to avoid prison -- is “like an eel down in the slime." And that's bad. 🗃️🧪
Meme. Colored medieval drawing of Simonides. You can tell it's him because his name is written above his head. Otherwise you might not know, because he is dressed very much like a medieval merchant. He is wearing a big maroon hat with a green band, and an orange cloak over a stylish black and yellow shirt. His yellow hair is long and flowing, and he is holding a book in his lap in his right hand. His face is lined with care or worry, and he is looking somewhere off to your left. He is not paying attention to you at all, really.

His thumb is holding his place in the middle of his book, and he looks like he's been interrupted in the middle of reading by some semi-distant disturbance. As if, somewhere off to your left, there is a bear trying to get onto a bus. The bear is apologetically looking for change to pay the fare, but everyone else is freaking out. Simonides is considering this scene, and writing a poem about it in his head.

Meme text reads:
"My best poetry
is eeligiac poetry"

We at Skype a Scientist are deeply troubled by the closure of the Academy of Natural Sciences. We urge you to contact Drexel University Leadership and Academy interim leader Trish Wellenbach to urge them to reopen the museum. President Merlo president@Drexel.edu Trish Wellenbach tw958@drexel.edu
a block of text with a statement that reads We at Skype a Scientist are deeply alarmed by the decision of Drexel University leadership and the Academy of Natural Sciences Board to close the Academy’s public museum.

Skype a Scientist is based in Philadelphia with deep roots in our city. Making science accessible, in particular for Philly’s children, is a top priority for our organization. We operate in community centers, at street festivals, and at the intersection of science and art. For the last 10 years, we have worked to engage a broader coalition of Philly residents to care for our local biodiversity.

Our program does not exist in a vacuum. The work that we do, alongside environmental education centers, our museums, classroom teachers, and more, create an ecosystem of connections with science. The loss of any part of this fragile ecosystem is detrimental. The Academy of Natural Sciences grounds biodiversity education in Philadelphia. With grand fossil halls, historical connections, and engaging exhibits, it is a place where many Philadelphians develop a love of science. Loss of access to this space cannot be tolerated.

We are living through an erosion of public education, particularly in the life sciences. Philadelphia cannot afford to lose our flagship biodiversity museum.

We call on the leaders of Drexel University and the Academy board to reverse their decision to close the Academy’s public museum. The children of Philadelphia and future generations of Philly-made scientists are counting on you.

Sometimes I look around and am kinda amazed that I've managed to scape together a viable career as an artist & mapmaker. This would have surprised Past Me greatly. And yet here I am...putting eels on sweatshirts, selling artwork, and hawking maps. Weird days, man. etsy.com/shop/SurprisedEelMaps
Black hooded sweatshirt with a white drawing of an eel on it. The drawing is made of abstract shapes and lines. Above the eel and to the right is text that read "EELS" and below is text that reads "Anguilla Anguilla".Art. Subway-style map of the itinerary in The Hobbit. The main journey is show in three different lines: red (Hobbiton to Goblin Town); green (Goblin Town to the Elvenking's Halls); and blue (Elvenking's Halls to Erebor). There are multiple stops on these lines. There is a yellow line going back from Erebor to Hobbiton, making stops at Beorn's Hall, Rivendell, and the Troll's Lair. There is an orange line directly from the Iron Hills on the map's right side to Erebor, and a purple line from Gundabad directly to Erebor.

The map's title reads: "Hobbit Transit Map" and there are directions for both There and Back Again listing the lines and transfer points. Between them, in the middle of the page, is a dragon drawn to resemble the dragon on Thror's Map from The Hobbit.

A key shows the names of each colored line:
Red: Western Lands Line
Green: Mountains and Forests Line
Blue: Barrel Line
Yellow: Gandalf Express
Orange: Iron Hills Business Line
Purple: Orc and Goblin Reserve Line

Text at the bottom right reads Surprised Eel Maps, 2025
