A definite sign of ageing is that you cannot impress me with "over 20 years" anymore. Am I expected to think this sauce is ancient, because it's as old as Nelly Furtado's Maneater?
Marks & Spencer in-store signage for a tomato sauce that says "The same Calabrian recipe for over 20 years"

Today I found out that Umberto Eco crafted a version of this meme in the 1980s…
Beware the
alibi of photocopies ! Photocopies are indis-
pensable instruments. They allow you to keep with you a text you have already read in the library, and to take home a text you have not read yet. But a set of photocopies can become an alibi. A student makes hundreds of pages of photocopies and takes them home, and the manual labor he exercises in doing so gives him the impression that he possesses the work. Owning the photocopies exempts the student from actually reading them. This sort of vertigo of accumulation, a neocapitalism of information, happens to many. Defend yourself from this trap: as soon as you have the photocopy, read it and annotate it immediately. If you are not in a great hurry, do not photocopy something new before you own (that is, before you have read and annotated) the previous set of photocopies. There are many things that I do not know because I photocopied a text and then relaxed as if I had read it.

Cage is reaching an age (he's 62) where it's very difficult for a movie star to continue having the same kind of star career Cage has enjoyed for 40 years and a huge part of how he's stayed relevant is exactly this "I want to get with someone doing something cool" attitude

Is there something secretly lucrative about giving a (presumably) chunky advance to an unpopular right wing politician that I don't know about? Or is it just people who work in publishing doing a favour for their mates?

There's plenty of issues with the policy, but I have to admit, I'm quite excited to see how Kemi can reconcile it with "the state should be doing less"

Unfortunately for a lot of students the customer brain is terminal. Tuition fees totally warps the relationship between staff and students into customer relations and impairs their ability to learn and ours to teach

Also, I haven't had to have this conversation with a child so who am I to judge, but it does seem like it's really REALLY important not to give them the impression that Dad might come back if they stop eating

My favourite one of these was the season of You set in the UK, where Joe has a spacious bookcase-filled apartment that would be at least somewhat plausible on a professor's salary in New England, except he's a lecturer in London

I only saw this after you deleted the initial thread, so sorry if I'm missing context, but yeah, there's a whole chapter in Shulamith Firestone's The Dialectic of Sex about the abolition of the family which also explicitly calls for the abolition of the age of consent

Quite weird to hear BBC News describe Jason Arday as “the black professor accused of plagiarism”. Is every story about a white professor going to include the relevant adjective?

The ability of viva examiners to spot plagiarism is really dependent on their familiarity with the literature - given that (usually) the student and supervisors recommend examiners, it's entirely possible that whoever was chosen wasn't the most relevant or accomplished

In terms of "fanfic premises where you get a magic sex tattoo on your wrist at 18", I rate this a B-. It's better than your future soulmate's name, but not as good as magically revealing whether you're a dom or sub and sorts you into the matching bom or sub house at BDSM Hogwarts
