Old man trying to be as best a teacher I can be. Hailing from sunny Leicestershire, I'm interested in most things educational. Thinking about what a Democratic education system could look like. #UKEd. #UKTeaching #PrimaryTeaching

Let's remember. There was nothing democratic about the EU referendum, or Brexit. Thank you.

The local elections in the UK have provided an interesting reflection on the understanding of, and the state of, democracy in the UK. Shame our political class have no interest in actually having a democratic UK.

@privateeyenews.bsky.social question for the editor. Was the council election results in England a secret ploy by Private Eye to boost readership figures? I think we should be told. Looks like your council investihative reporters will have years of work now!

On the one hand, we cannot have a society where protest and free speech are curtailed. But we also have to understand that it's a responsibility that needs to be used with care. Somewhere along the line, ee forgot that.

What happens when you miss PPA? In a busy, challening school, if you miss PPA you lose it. This has a knock on effect, because you get to Friday, feel too exhausted, do the family thing Saturday, then wake up with that cold emptiness and pressure on Sunday.

I've always struggled to fit in. I thought teaching might be it, or at least it for long enough for fitting in not to matter anymore. However, that appears not to be the case. Might be back to the drawing board. I think I need a job that pays me to stay away from everyone. And maybe read books.

The LA have put up a post giving notice schools may be closed due to strike action. I’m now explaining this to various “9-3 part time teachers” comments.
A chalkboard with the following written on it

For those of you who don’t understand teaching:
* I have to be in school before the lessons
* I have to plan the lessons before I teach them
* I have to prepare the classroom and resources for the lessons
* I have to mark the lessons after I teach them
*I spend my breaks organising lessons and talking to pupils & colleagues
* I have meetings after the lessons
* I talk to parents after the lessons
*I talk to my managers after the lessons
* I have training sessions after the lessons
* I tidy the classroom after the lessons
* I record data on what happens in the lessons
*I plan support for pupils finding the lessons difficult
* I help children get on with each other between the lessons
* I write reports on what happens in the lessons
I do not just work 9-3 40 weeks a year.
Many teachers work over 50 hours a week including evenings &
weekends at home.

If education is not built from the bottom up, with capacity at its core, and context as its guide, it will fail. It's why it's failing now. The only thing keeping education afloat is the above-and-beyond sacrifices of the staff at all levels.

I have nothing but fearful dread every time I hear that a government is doing something about education. It never feels like frontline staff are ever involved or consulted. And in Education, context is everything.
