A broad-tailed hummingbird hovers next to an anise hyssop plant framed by purple blooms and with a rainbow behind it!!! The bird also has a little bead of water on its bill because it is raining.

Turning back to VR for a moment, I appreciate this smart framing of Meta’s headsets—that even if you don’t see ads when you turn them on they should still be considered ad-driven devices, since that’s ultimately what’s paying for all of it (Ali Bar-Zeev interviewed by Gabriele Romagnoli)
The Quest 3 is the cheapest high-quality headset ever. Are we finally there?

Avi Bar-Zeev: It's an impressive device, but I have philosophical issues with it. Meta can afford to sell it cheap because it's subsidized by ad revenue. Even if they're not running ads on the headset yet, the money keeping that division alive comes from ad dollars. I don't think we had to rush into making the cheapest possible headset. The market isn't ready for it.

Imperial County is a refuge for California’s vanishing burrowing owls. But do they need more protection?
State officials are weighing listing the tiny birds as an endangered species, a decision that could have big implications for the farming and renewable energy-focused county.

That Kylie Kelce could end up being "the left's Joe Rogan" is going to really fuck with some of the (ahem, male) pundits' heads. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/19/b...
If her life were normal during the election, she might have felt safe sharing her political views, which it turns out “aggressively lean” left, she said.

Instead, some people online speculated her family was “MAGA.” Others assumed she was aligned with Ms. Swift, who endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. One day a honking caravan of cars with Trump flags and signs “slow-rolled past our house,” Ms. Kelce said. “To me, that was like, ‘We know where you live.’” (The Kelces do not live in a remote, gated community. A longtime employee said it was not unusual to see strangers doing “slow-rolls,” or to walk out of the house and hear a passer-by yell, “Go, Birds!”)

When asked if politicians would be welcome on “Not Gonna Lie” — as they were on “Call Her Daddy” and “The Joe Rogan Experience” in October — Ms. Kelce did not hesitate.“I would talk to Michelle Obama in a heartbeat, and I know she is not personally running,” she said. “But I would love it if she would.” She also expressed interest in interviewing Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, whom she said she admired for putting free period products in school bathrooms.

If she is aware the revelation of her Democratic politics might cause a stir with fans or the internet at large, Ms. Kelce does not seem to mind.

“I mean this in the most respectful way,” she said. “I don’t care what other people have to say.”
