A golden-colored mushroom emerges from flat dark brown soil. Its stipe is short and stands only an inch above the ground. The shiny cap is almost taller than the stipe and is the same golden color. As its common name suggests, the cap is conical and pointy, like a witch's hat.

The western bitter bolete is a mostly pale yellow bolete with a magical characteristic: it stains blue when bruised or cut. To show off this fun color-changing ability, my wife cut a slice of the cap off and wrote "I'm blue" in the yellow pores of the slice, and the words immediately turned a deep blue, along with the cut edges of the mushroom.

A single club fungus with a forked top grows out of black and brown cedar duff. Its base is skinny and it gradually gets wider towards the top until it forks. It starts out more orange near the ground and turns bright yellow at the top.

A tall and unique mushroom called the western black elfin saddle, or Helvella vespertina, grows with a slight lean to the left above the ground. Its stipe is long, maybe five to six inches, white, and has an unusual folded and wrinkly texture. The cap is black and also has a strange folded texture. It often grows into a saddle-like shape, but this one is more round with flared edges.

Rising from dark earth and tree duff, a beautiful tropical orange mushroom glows. Its stipe is smooth and changes from a nearly reddish-orange at its base to a yellow-orange near the cap. The cap follows the same color gradient. The yellow-orange is at the margins of its serrated cap, and the darker orange is at the top. Its surface is slightly reflective, bumpy, and wax-like.

A yellow and pinkish-orange parrot mushroom grows out of wet, dark brown ground. Its half-inch-tall stipe is yellow and has patches of a white substance on it (possibly mycelium or mold). Its cap is still half-connected to the stipe. The right side of the cap lifts away from the stipe but has been chewed by a slug. The cap is smooth, pinkish-orange, and very shiny from the layer of slime that coats it.

The beautiful cone tooth fungus, scientifically known as Auriscalpium vulgare, grows from a fallen fir cone. Its fuzzy brown stipe grows at an angle parallel to the ground before turning straight up for about an inch, leading to its toothy light brown cap. The cap is circular with slightly rough edges. Tiny light brown teeth, each about a millimeter long, hang down and are packed tightly together. The background is a solid emerald green color.

Growing on top of a rotted log, a gorgeous cluster of neon yellow slime mold stands in dim light. The stalks of the slime mold have a thin, hair-like, black strand running through the center, but are otherwise a jelly-like substance with serrated edges. Each stalk touches the other with no gaps in between. Each stalk ends with a round, ball-shaped top. The whole cluster stands about 1 cm tall and about an inch long.

On the side of a fallen log, a large cluster of the chocolate tube slime mold, Stemonitis splendens, grows. In the center of the cluster, it is in its flat, slimy, and white stage. As you look from the center to the edge, different stages emerge. In some cases, it stands up like little pink stalks, and farther away from the center, the stalks get darker red and eventually brown.

A small, connected group of chocolate tube slime mold is caught changing colors from red to brown as it matures. This slime mold gets its name from its final stage of life, where it ends up looking like a bunch of tiny tubes made of fuzzy chocolate. At this stage, it looks like a bunch of vertical jerky sticks connected together. This cluster stands about 1cm tall and is about 1cm wide.

Growing out of dark brown decaying cedar duff, a beautiful and shiny parrot mushroom leans a bit to the left. Its smooth yellow stipe stands about an inch and a half tall. Its smooth, dark green, and shiny cap is midway between cone and dome-shaped. A glowing drip of clear slime begins to form on the bottom left edge of the cap.

A small neon-yellow slime mold grows out of dark brown rotting wood. The stalks stand about 2 or 3 mm tall and have serrated edges. The tops of these stalks are rounded like little shiny balls. This grouping is about one inch wide and a quarter of an inch deep.

A parrot mushroom with a dry green cap bends up and to the left out of the earth. Its smooth stipe is yellow and still shiny due to the thin layer of slime that covers it. Across an old, decaying, dark brown log, pea-sized blobs of bright reddish-orange are scattered. These orange blobs are a slime mold named wolf's milk (not sure where the name comes from). When squished at the right stage of growth, they pop and ooze orange liquid.

An extremely short (1/4th of an inch tall) parrot mushroom grows out of a mixture of orange and brown fir and cedar duff. Its stipe is smooth, shiny, and yellow. Its cap, which is covered in streaks of light from reflections of the sky between the trees above, is a beautiful mixture of light and emerald green.

It has a short and curved yellow stipe. The tiny cap is conical in shape but has a smooth, round top. An entirely tan-colored mushroom grows at a unique angle out of the soil and is surrounded by leafy green moss. This mushroom grows slightly to the left from its base, but then the cap bends in the opposite direction to the right. This mushroom has a white, skirt-like ring just under the cap where the mushroom bends back to the right. Its cap is round and dome-like.

Winding out of bright green and mostly out-of-focus moss, a yellow-stiped and yellow-capped parrot mushroom shows off its shiny nature. The stipe is smooth and dark yellow. The cap is lighter yellow, though the yellow fades to olive green at the very top. An overcast sky is reflected in the center of the cap due to it being very wet and slimy.
