In 1856/57 a man visited Richard Owen at his office with "a stuffed platypus and a Hertfordshire countryman who swore that he had taken the animal alive from a local pond". Owen charged the man with gross deceit and was glad to make him "slink away, evidently ashamed of himself".

It's October, and here in southern England it's around 17 deg C today, which is something like 6 deg C over the mean. Decades of failing to take action mostly mean that it's too late to disrupt climate breakdown. Vote for people who speak about the issues and are prepared to do something.

Each woman smuggled into the Bayeux Tapestry tells a powerful story
Like most wars the tale is centred on men, but nuns wove a compelling subplot into the margins

Yup. Even in health services where you’d think the person should have had the resources to say, “is there anything you want to talk about?” when she went with a traumatic UTI I can’t imagine this is the model of care
This detail about her
Cornell Health appointment is awful:
"She told the doctor she contracted the U.T.I. "in a traumatic way," according to a transcript of her conversation with investigators. "She didn't really follow up on that,"
Jane Doe said of the doctor. "She just suggested l go to therapy."

The Phantom of Heilbronn, also referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a presumed female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at 40 crime scenes across Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

In March 2009, investigators concluded that the supposed serial killer did not exist, and the DNA belonged to a woman who worked at a factory that made the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples

Fig. 1. Pleuromya cf. uniformis (Sowerby 1813), Jurassic, Morocco. Internal mould of articulated specimen bearing a religious inscription in high relief. Museo Geominero, Madrid, catalogue number MGM-7809X. (a) Left valve view; (b) right valve view; (c) anterior view; (d) dorsal view; and (e) detail showing striations visible on the surface of the letters (left arrow) and how a fissure in the rock also affects the letter (right arrows), indicating that the letters were carved in high relief and do not represent surface adherences of any foreign material. The thick patina of dirt that covered the specimen, originally dark grey in colour, was removed by washing with detergents, alternating with immersions in hydrogen peroxide.
