Ed’s seen plenty of folks run a marathon.

He’s also seen plenty of folks walk a marathon.

But he’s never seen anyone race walk a marathon. Until now.

Ed notices the cadence before anything else. It’s all hips. Hips swiveling and dipping like those of a supermodel, if that model were crossing a football field at the same pace the others made it down the catwalk. Arms pumping double time but no bounce in the shoulders–eerily smooth from the chest up. And while on the topic of chest…this might be the broadest chest Ed’s ever seen on an endurance athlete. A luminous pink shirt hugs his biceps, the swell of his tits, the small peaks of his–Jesus. With the rain and the chill, someone’s gonna get an eye poked out.

Ed hopes it’s him.

Izzy supposed that he should be pleased that a queer-friendly show had
garnered so much attention, and he was. Sort of. Mostly, though, he was
bitter. His beloved Republic of Pirates was queer-friendly too, and its leads had
sizzling chemistry, due to having been friends in real life for decades. It
deserved every bit of the accolades that Heated Rivalry was receiving.
Instead, it had been cancelled when it still needed one more season to finish
telling its epic story.
"A story that didn't have to resort to shoving chiseled abs and rock-hard pecs
and explicit sex scenes in the viewers' faces,
" he fumed silently. "A story told
the old-fashioned way, with brilliant performances and clever, witty dialogue.
The 'Heated Rivalry' creators wouldn't recognize those things if they tripped
over them. "

This is the latest installment in my "Izzy's Hobby" series. I'd recommend that

A Drabble for any book! Heavily inspired by the Night Circus with mild sort of spoilers for the ending of it just in case …

Archie followed Jim through the tent, her duffel bag with her belongings over one shoulder and the wicker basket that contained Beau, her pet python / other half of her circus double act.

“But what really happened?” she probed again. “Last year?”

Jim had their back to her and they tugged a cloth out of their back pocket, polishing the sheath of their already immaculate knife. “Don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“C’mon dude, I’m not that gullible.”

Jim flashed her a look over their shoulder, some kind of knowing smirk. Archie grinned and rolled her eyes. “Okay, I am a bit but to believe that whole story that it was just a fire that resulted in a change in management? When both The Gentleman and Blackbeard have never been seen since? Mr Hornigold and Prince Richard too?”

“I don’t know what to tell you, that’s what happened,” Jim shrugged, turning back to their knife cleaning.

“I know I’m like… new here. But you can trust me, you know Jim?” Archie said after a few moments, lowering her voice and stepping closer to the knife thrower. Jim looked at her, their pretty brown eyes narrowing as their gazes caught. They were closer together than Archie had anticipated actually.

The gas lantern in the corner flickered, a small flash of bright gold causing the room to light up just a little brighter. Jim looked over to it and grinned as the lamp shone more brilliantly than before. A second flash of light joined it, a stream of violet light, almost moving of it’s own accord to sidle next to the golden light.

“Lamps don’t normally glow purple now do they?” Archie said curiously, watching as the lamp lights intertwined themselves together in a perfect coil. Jim shrugged their shoulders again.

“There’s a lot of things you have yet to learn about this place,” they said, a glint in their eye that Archie was determined to get to the bottom of. “Anyway, we’re late for practice. Zheng will go mad if we delay her schedule, let’s go.” Jim ushered Archie out of the tent, away from the unusual lamp light.

The lights flickered together, always side by side as they danced around the circus watching Jim and their new prospective lover. They loved love, after all.

It’s what keeps The Circus running.

“Stede!!! I need your help!!” Lucius yelled down the phone almost the second Stede answered it, barely getting a chance to say hello.

“What’s the matter?”

“Well, you know that guy I’ve been seeing? Fang?”

“Yes and despite me very much not asking, you showed me the portrait you’d done of him,” Stede replied dryly.

“I know I really captured his likeness,” Lucius paused to sigh dreamily for a moment before snapping back into whatever his predicament was. “So er. Turns out when Fang said he ‘has a few goats’, he owns like, an entire fucking farm of the things. Like in the hundreds and there are babies and milking stations and everything.”

Stede frowned, not entirely seeing what the problem was. Sounds like to him that Lucius was getting to hang out with some baby goats. Adorable.

“Okaaaay?” he elongated the word, waiting for his friend to get to the point.

“So he left me alone with them in the barn while he went to go grab us a cuppa and I may have accidentally leant on the gate and it opened and I fell on my arse and now they’ve all gone out.”

Stede’s eyes widened as he stifled a laugh. “They’ve … gone out?”

“Yes, like into the surrounding fields and everything.”

“So why do you need my help?”

“To come and bring them in!!”

“Lucius! Do you really think I have nothing better to do than chase hundreds of goats around?”

“If I answer that question honestly, you won’t help me,” Lucius replied solemnly.

Stede sighed. To be fair, what was he doing for the rest of the day? The kids were at Mary’s and he’d just been about to crack the spine of a new book. He supposed the book would still be waiting for him.

“Text me the address,” he said wearily.

“Ah you’re the best! Fang’s friend Ed is here too, he was painting a mural for him on one of the barns. He’s going to help you gather them in.”

“And what are you going to be doing?”

“Keeping Fang inside the house to do some of the things I do best in the hope he won’t notice I’ve accidentally released all his goats?”

“Fair enough.”

Ed’s done a lot of weird shit to support Stede’s cryptid fascination. He was happy to do it, don’t get him wrong. There’s not a single thing he’d deny Stede. It’s just that he never imagined he’d spend so much time with an eye pressed to the eyepiece of a telescope, learning about hydrophones, or comparing the merits of different models of trail cams.

Today’s activity was maybe the most surprising, in all kinds of ways.

“Do you, Bigfoot, take this Yeti to be your lawfully wedded husband?” Oluwande asked Stede.

“I do,” the reply was muffled through the gigantic rubber mask.

“And do you, Yeti, take this Bigfoot to be your lawfully wedded husband?”

“I do,” grinned Ed, thankful he had opted for the wig and horns and not the full mask; he wouldn’t have been able to wipe away his happy tears otherwise.

“You may now kiss your cryptid,” Olu announced.

Stede lifted his mask and stepped into Ed’s kiss as raucous applause broke out around them.

“Bet you never thought you’d be wearing a Yeti suit for this occasion, eh?” Stede asked through his own watery smile.

“Nah mate, I’m not surprised,” Ed chuckled, plucking at the fur of the suit, “I always wanted to wear white at my wedding.”
