The Internal Revenue Service is warning taxpayers, tribal communities, businesses and tax professionals about promoters selling fraudulent “Tribal Tax Credits” that do not exist under federal law. The IRS said promoters are falsely claiming that the purported credits can reduce federal tax liabilities or generate refunds. The schemes are marketed under names including “Tribal Tax Credits,” “Native American Tax Credits” and “Sovereign Tribal Tax Credits.” The agency warned that taxpayers who claim the nonexistent credits could face civil and criminal penalties. “Protecting taxpayers and the integrity of the tax system remains central to the IRS mission,” said IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J.
