This is the real threat: we will boil the oceans with LHDEULLMPA because for some reason we want them to do less artfully what we already know how to do.

Φphi @o-phi.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
One way of reading the NavierStokes news this week is that a LHDEULLMPA just spent 10s of millions of dollars and brought who knows what other consequences to recreate an unpublished proof they may have accidentally had in their training data.

[some-subscribed-rss] New Post: OpenAI spent millions to solve this famous math problem — mathematicians are furious, by Kai Williams www.understandingai.org/p/openai-sp…
Teaser:

OpenAI spent millions of compute to solve a famous math problem—the Navier-Stokes Millennium Problem—using a swarm of 10,000 AI agents. But instead of celebration, the announcement sparked fury. Mathematician Tristan Buckmaster went public with a blistering statement, alleging that OpenAI, after learning of his own parallel work, raced to beat him to the solution using overwhelming resources, then offered him a co-authorship deal that excluded his collaborator. The article digs into the math behind the breakthrough, the ethics of the scoop, and what it means for the future of a field built on open collaboration.

President of MIT not mincing words today in @statnews.com www.statnews.com/2026/05/27/s...
So let me say it as clearly as I can: Without basic scientific research, supported by the kind of farsighted public investment that allows large-scale, undirected, curiosity-driven inquiry, the scientific pipeline will run dry.
In daily life, people may not feel the effects right away, or even in 10 years. But we will feel it. And when someone we love needs therapies that could have emerged but didn't or when other countries now
investing in science can launch new science-based industries or run their societies on vast resources of fusion energy or reap the benefits of quantum computing power or advanced medical breakthroughs, America will wish it sustained its leadership in scientific research here and now.
Sally Kornbluth is the president of MIT.

The reason you'll never be able to stop LLMs from "hallucinating" is because they don't hallucinate. They output pattern-matched responses, things that appear similar to answers based on a database. It can't know what's in that answer because it doesn't know anything.

the discourse on what jobs are acceptable to replace with generative AI reveals a lot about what we think of other people's jobs
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence lies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.
