So, as one side of balance sheet (debt) increases the other side of balance sheet (assets) also increases. Any analysis of debt that does not recognise both sides of the balance sheet is basically useless. Here's how Stats NZ see it... Note the ~$200bn owed to the rest of the world. [7/n]

going into a time of year that distillate demand increases (heating oil and diesel are cousins and heating oil and farm use lead to higher consumption in fall/winter), inventories are at their lowest in 30 years.

Everyone who pays attention knows that people in charge in Hawai’i are corrupt and incompetent. This story about how Governor Josh Green wants to import LNG instead of build out solar, which contradicts the state’s 100% renewable energy goal, perfectly exemplifies that corruption and incompetence.

Hawaiʻi committed to 100% clean energy. Now it’s flirting with…
Gov. Josh Green, a Democrat, wants to import LNG to slash energy bills. But the move might not lead to savings — and it could trip up the state’s climate…

Once you were away from a main road, it was quiet, safe. Drivers were courteous and their speeds were low. You can walk or ride without feeling threatened by traffic.

After visiting Tokyo, I came away feeling that we do often over engineer our streets with crossings, traffic lights, bike paths etc. But only because we encourage auto domination with on street parking, oversized vehicles and crazy speeds.

Yea seems pretty weird. That said, test environments can be the wild west and if you don't deploy often and aren't paying attention... i guess you can promote something through to prod which blows up your data.

If there are shortages internationally, do we leave the realms of a competitive market? What about speculators buying up fuel on the basis fuel prices will continue to rise? Would chaotic price rises cause harm and lead to unpredictable behaviour?

If prices were inflating mid shipment, gov ends up guaranteeibg payment to ensure supply. They then demand first dibs for essential services. Effective rationing?

Matt M @nzmm.bsky.social · 24/03/2026
The uncertainty around fuel delivery is high. Tankers divert to higher bidders. The risk of not being able to supply essential services is too high to bare socially/politically.

Matt M @nzmm.bsky.social · 24/03/2026
Wouldn't you get to a point where rationing is required for essential services regardless of price?

That was probably me- I did a bunch of analysis in 2019 that business confidence for NZ was least correlated to their economy in all the world, matched party in power & PM gender and length of office, and we would all be better just looking at other countries confidence.
Party and PM Gender and business confidenceCorrelation of BC to GDP change in that countryDegree of correlation between all countries Business Confidence and NZ economyLinear model results ignoring the economy and matching business confidence to politics
