Treating this as an unstoppable race, and accepting the "endgame" of runaway warming, is a reckless gamble that should never be decided in a boardroom alone. Betting on future carbon removal to fix today's emissions requires far more confidence than the evidence supports.

Overshoot of 1.5 °C is inevitable, but don't forget that we need stringent methane mitigation to keep warming to below 2 °C. Without methane mitigation peak warming below 2 °C becomes unlikely, even with extremely ambitious CO2 emission reductions! www.nature.com/articles/s43247-026-03832-1

Temperature overshoot means more than cleaning up a slightly bigger mess a little later. TL;DR: If we ever return to 1.5 °C, it will likely take centuries. The way overshoot scenarios are often sketched fails to highlight that. iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...

National carbon budgets are smaller than commonly assumed because scientists and countries count CO₂ differently. Our new study in Nature Communications corrects for this and finds that the 1.5 °C budget shrinks by ~50%, the 2 °C budget by ~20%. Paper + data: www.nature.com/articles/s41... Thread 👇

The people who produce this Mauna Loa atmospheric CO₂ record have a lab in Hilo, Hawaiʻi, about 50 miles (80 km) from the observatory. By closing the lab, it'll be really difficult to maintain the CO₂ observations.
A line graph showing atmospheric CO2 levels at Mauna Loa Observatory from 1955 to 2025. The y-axis represents CO2 mole fraction in parts per million (ppm), ranging from 320 to 420 ppm, while the x-axis is years.

In erschütternden Breaking-News-Situationen ist es immer sinnvoll, sich diesen Ratgeber vor Augen zu führen - von @onthemedia.bsky.social #Magdeburg
1. In the immediate aftermath, news outlets will get it wrong.
2. Don't trust anonymous sources.
3. Don't trust stories that cite another news outlet as the source of the information.
4. There's almost never a second shooter.
5. Pay attention to the language the media uses.
• "We are getting reports"... could mean anything.
• "We are seeking confirmation"... means they don't have it.
• "[News outlet] has learned"... means it has a scoop or is going out on limb. i
6. Look for news outlets close to the incident.
7. Compare multiple sources.
8. Big news brings out the fakers. And photoshoppers.
9. Beware reflexive retweeting. Some of this is on you.

Very interesting post and opinion piece on climate policy. Focus on the US – but I think it's relevant for Europe, too: "... create durable economic incentives that would survive political transitions. When decarbonization becomes good business, it becomes harder to dismantle climate progress."

Renewable energies are not the main driver of biodiversity loss. It is rather the other way round: renewables can limit climate change in order to preserve biodiversity. Cyril Brunner contextualises the trade-offs from a scientific perspective.
