It's not about the diesel, Trumps doing what he can to get as much money as possible before losing the midterms. Even if it means throwing all alliances under the bus.

Jake Broe has a good analysis. Trump has the power to sanction Russia. 1) Sanction Russia 2) Russian overseas oil assets become worth less 3) Trump buys the assets 4) Trump lifts sanctions 5) assets increase in value And that's the bribe.

It's not forced. Trump chose this. He's getting 15 minutes worth of Diesel in one month, then 30 minutes worth. It's not about diesel.

Maybe the most amazing aspect of the Russo-Ukraine War is that Russia is getting backing from both China and the USA, the two largest powers of the moment--and Ukraine could still emerge triumphant as long as Europe backs it stoutly.

1/ Russian sources expect that as well as purchasing Russian oil and diesel, Donald Trump will provide Russia with spare parts to repair the refineries damaged by Ukrainian drone strikes. They anticipate that Trump's fuel deal will lead to a Russian victory. ⬇️

NB the oil analysts I've been watching have pointed out that it's a tiny amount of diesel. Russia can't export it. The important bit is that the US can blame Ukraine for attacking Russian refinaries, and pretend that's the reason diesel prices are high.

There could be 2 parts to this, a low key part where people have been arrested and released, and a more serious part that's still a threat.

The UK can put restrictions on the use of the airbases. For example Starmer originally said no to the Iran war. And the US wouldn't be allowed to attack Greenland from the UK. There's no need to kick the US out from that angle.

I suppose if the government gets it's act together then they might be able to break the link between gas prices and electricity prices.. Is that possible in the next year?
110
Peter Adamson @nsr2.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Does it follow that UK electricity bills will be high for the next year? Since electricity generation is tied to gas. (IOG daytime rate is 36p/kwh pondering fixing) or will US gas reduce UK electricity prices?

I suspect banning flying would have an effect - force aviation fuel prices to be lower than diesel and refinaries would switch to diesel for max profits.
000
Peter Adamson @nsr2.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
There are no easy answers. The price cap will backfire - if you are a refinary - do you sell diesel to the UK at full price, or Italy and make less money? So the price cap will generate shortages. The tax rebate will lower the cost of diesel, until it is forced to go higher.
