Professor skinner meme

Anthropic is involved with Colossus, but XAI is bad. does that make Anthropic bad too?

No, after a pretty thorough read about air pollution over multiple weeks, I am somewhat down-weighting my concern about data center effects.

While we are transfixed by the antics of our supposed "leaders", a catastrophe of astonishing proportions has been creeping up on us. Climate scientists now believe it is more likely than not to happen, and soon. This week's column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

A catastrophic climate event is upon us. Here is why you’ve heard so little about it | George Monbiot
Scientists say a crucial Atlantic system is set to collapse. But the billionaire death cult that steers humanity’s destiny just doesn’t do existential crises, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

You know, Huntington, West Virginia would be a great small city but for the fact that much of the metro area's employment and retail has sprawled out along the stretch of US 60 just East of the city proper, which is one of the most wretched stroads I've ever escaped with my life

North Americans love to spend their lives on a dystopian treadmill working fifty hour weeks with one week's vacation to service their college, car and mortgage debt and then look down on Europeans because the number on our paychecks isn't as big

for almost 15 years, i was willing to speak the truth even when it was unpopular. at first they mocked me, threw rocks at me, called me an "old man" who needed to "shut the fuck up." now they take these things as self-evident.
An article I wrote in September 8, 2011 titled "Rise is Important." The visible text reads: "I strongly believe that pants look best when they sit on, not just at, your hips.

Where your pants sit on you is determined by your rise, which is the ..."Someone on Twitter posted screenshots from the Marty Supreme film, saying "marty's whole life could be falling apart and he woudl still have a good ass outfit on."

Someone retweets them and adds: This is the power of high waisted pants, my brothers.

Reflections on last week's #WeekWithoutDriving in a city that still refuses to acknowledge the existence of its nondrivers — which a comprehensive new report claims make up one-third of LA's population

One-third of Angelenos do not drive
Walking back the "car-free" games promise is unconscionable in a city where the people who don't drive are also the most vulnerable users of our streets

A station that gets 6 trains per direction per day should look like Exo's stations, not like that, honestly. There are hundreds of bus stops that serve more people that need investment in fixed infrastructure more than this. Just build a platform and add 3 bus shelters.

So what precisely do the right want to do about the white working classes? Certainly not go to university, as they want numbers down. Nor to have a unionised manufacturing job, as they don't want unions. No, they just want pawns as part of their culture wars. They don't give a toss.

King County Metro states 55% of fare revenue comes from ORCA Business Passport (employers paying per head for their employees to have annual transit passes). Does that mean that uptake is exceptionally high, or that fare evasion is the norm for everyone else?

This construction project was on time and on budget. Then came ICE.
Under a broiling Alabama sky a frustrated Robby Robertson, a construction site superintendent, surveys an 84,000 square foot, mostly built recreation center close to the Gulf coast port city of Mobile. The site is eerily quiet.

There are many ways for traincrew to fuck up, but only three ways to get fired. First, gross misconduct, like assaulting someone or going on the fiddle. Second, showing up intoxicated. Third, lying to cover up a safety incident.

My hot take re driver controlled train operation on main line rail is that most discussions are badly myopic. Can a driver safely dispatch a train using cameras? Sure. But does the additional workload impact upon the driver's ability to focus on their other safety critical duties?

Re cafe cars vs more capacity: An option is to design a flexible car with a small serving area plus reasonably comfortable seats around tables (like the British Mk3 coach interior pictured), used for cafe seating most of the time, and as a class of seating accommodation at the busiest times.

Weird take that Montréal's transit system is going to be ruined by the stipulation that other agencies don't compete with the REM. In an efficient urban transit system, buses are coordinated with your high capacity rail system, not in competition with it!
