A train wouldn't be as good without a cute conductor like me :(

Leeds could never, because this silly thing has less capacity than a bus

So, a bus with extra steps?

As ever, I'm unconvinced that the general public are budget hawks keenly watching the efficiency with which trains from Castleford to Pontefract are crewed before they'll hear of Cross Gates getting quad tracked

Anthropic is involved with Colossus, but XAI is bad. does that make Anthropic bad too?

No, after a pretty thorough read about air pollution over multiple weeks, I am somewhat down-weighting my concern about data center effects.

I would prefer that overall subsidy were higher, and that intercity and commuter trains had more capacity and lower fares. I don't think that subsidies to regional trains, which are prevalent in many countries, prevent this from being the case.

Martha Lauren @nqrw.bsky.social · 16/05/2026
This graph seems to be telling me that TOCs which mostly operate intercity or commuter traffic over busy main lines need little subsidy, which TOCs which mostly operate regional traffic over secondary routes need more subsidy. This is the result I would have expected.

Basically London spends enormous amounts on operating costs for local buses, the most labour-intensive way to provide peak capacity, because Westminster is allergic to capital spending on the most obviously necessary projects

Martha Lauren @nqrw.bsky.social · 16/05/2026
London is excellent at running suburban rail into legacy downtown terminals. But I agree that we ought to have less of that, and more cross-city trunk lines. As for high rail fares and over-reliance on buses, that's a result of capacity, not operating cost.

While we are transfixed by the antics of our supposed "leaders", a catastrophe of astonishing proportions has been creeping up on us. Climate scientists now believe it is more likely than not to happen, and soon. This week's column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

A catastrophic climate event is upon us. Here is why you’ve heard so little about it | George Monbiot
Scientists say a crucial Atlantic system is set to collapse. But the billionaire death cult that steers humanity’s destiny just doesn’t do existential crises, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

You know, Huntington, West Virginia would be a great small city but for the fact that much of the metro area's employment and retail has sprawled out along the stretch of US 60 just East of the city proper, which is one of the most wretched stroads I've ever escaped with my life

North Americans love to spend their lives on a dystopian treadmill working fifty hour weeks with one week's vacation to service their college, car and mortgage debt and then look down on Europeans because the number on our paychecks isn't as big

for almost 15 years, i was willing to speak the truth even when it was unpopular. at first they mocked me, threw rocks at me, called me an "old man" who needed to "shut the fuck up." now they take these things as self-evident.
An article I wrote in September 8, 2011 titled "Rise is Important." The visible text reads: "I strongly believe that pants look best when they sit on, not just at, your hips.

Where your pants sit on you is determined by your rise, which is the ..."Someone on Twitter posted screenshots from the Marty Supreme film, saying "marty's whole life could be falling apart and he woudl still have a good ass outfit on."

Someone retweets them and adds: This is the power of high waisted pants, my brothers.

Reflections on last week's #WeekWithoutDriving in a city that still refuses to acknowledge the existence of its nondrivers — which a comprehensive new report claims make up one-third of LA's population

One-third of Angelenos do not drive
Walking back the "car-free" games promise is unconscionable in a city where the people who don't drive are also the most vulnerable users of our streets

You forget Marco, this isn't for the sort of people who ride the bus, it's for the sort of people to drive. A sort of remote parking lot for downtown Toronto. One cannot expect them to wait in an open shelter any more than one could expect a nobleman to subsist on the serfs' coarse potage!

A station that gets 6 trains per direction per day should look like Exo's stations, not like that, honestly. There are hundreds of bus stops that serve more people that need investment in fixed infrastructure more than this. Just build a platform and add 3 bus shelters.
