Replacing television and film with Whatever All This Is has gone so well. The bright future that the disrupters came up with (a version of having a very big hard drive of indifferent content you can’t navigate and don’t value) has worked about as well as it did for music. We’re all so much poorer.

What on earth is happening?
This had become the new normal. RNLI crew members had been forced to take their permits off their cars after their tyres have been repeatedly slashed. Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised, recognised for TV interviews he had done.

The RNLI has said the abuse of volunteers in Portsmouth has forced it to close the lifeboat station there and stop operating since September 10. Nearby stations have been providing cover to the area instead. One of the UK's largest coastal cities without a lifeboat because of the far-right.

buttondown.com/cooray_smith... I've had what might be a new, and possibly even significant, thought about Doctor Who's late 1980s cancellation. This is a free subscribers e-mail, and free to read on the site too, but if you agree, why not become a paid subscriber? Or indeed, even if you don't.

Mum and very young daughter paying at this café. Daughter holds up card, barista asks, "Aww, are you paying for your mum today?" And I'm sorry, but that woman is the biggest cheapskate. Her kid is like six, she cannot possibly be earning.

Seen on Facebook: someone got their copy of The Dinosaur Invasion signed by Matt Haig! What a coup!
The title page of the children's novel Doctor Who and the Dinosaur Invasion, apparently signed by the author Malcolm Hulke. However, being a signature, only the initials of M and H are beyond ddispute, the remaining letters rendered ambiguous by the quirks of handwriting, hence my rather amusing joke.

You know when you try to get out of someone's way, only for them to try getting out of your way, so you move back, only for them to move back, and so on? I think I just became a small boy's first ever experience of that.

What a sad day. Raising a glass to that very fine actor Tom Chadbon, who graced every franchise from James Bond to Blake’s 7 to Game of Thrones, and whose brilliant comic turn as Duggan, the out-of-his-depth private detective in the 1979 Doctor Who classic City of Death, is the stuff of TV legend.
