No one needs to be told this, but in policing research there’s this thing called “cop culture” [see Robert Reiner] and part of it is a “thirst for action”. Police inherently want there to be riots and a chase because police work, for the most part, is extremely boring.

On Nov. 7th, I told my sociolinguistics students this was going to happen. They did an activity on language policy and one of the lessons was that repressive regimes always try to criminalize languages that are not ideologically associated with nationalism. I’m sorry I was right.

These next few years could very well be a turning point in Irish politics. A strong opposition from SF, SD, LAB, etc could pave the way for a realistic government without FFG. In 2016 SF, SD and LAB had a combined total of 33 seats. Today they’ll have 59. Change takes time, but it’s coming.
