I actually don’t love the idea of “”democratizing”” the tools of art before democratizing the means of production. AI feels like the ultimate end result of this: cheap, endless labor and absolutely nothing gained for individuals humans (if anything it further stratifies based on existing systems)

I had a thought about this, and about comics-as-acting/theater yesterday. I think it was Neal Adams (may have also been Eisner) who said that every panel should be a single moment in time, meaning there’s no A-B-A back-and-forth: A speaks, B responds, then cut away to a new panel for A’s response.

I think we underestimate the generational difference how reading about nature in say, the 1950s was an endless trove of discovery and wonder and reading about nature in the 2020s is like a eulogy. How we relate to nature is how we relate to world, it changes your brain.

the problem with this Barry Windsor-Smith quote from his TCJ interview is that, while 100% correct, Liefeld is in no way a minority anymore (if he ever was) — the mainstream-corporate culture at large encourages exactly this sort of aesthetic solipsism

Rob Liefeld has nothing to offer. It's as plain as bacon on your plate. He has nothing to offer. He cannot draw. He can't write. He is a young boy almost, I would expect, whose culture is bubble gum wrappers, Saturday morning cartoons, Marvel comics; that's his culture. Somebody was at his house and came back with a report: There is not a single book in his house — only comic books. I see nothing in his work that allows me to even guess that there's any depth involved in that person that might come to the fore given time.

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil made me feel how it felt to play Resident Evil on a CRTV in friend’s rec room when I was 15 and that’s, to me, a HUGE success. Not in a bland referential way but truly capturing an essence, without worrying about a checklist of characters or excessive winking.

I think if there’s one distant goal of my body of work that I hope to one day achieve, it’s to make people less numb about extinction. We’re so very very numb to it, (being a now-common occurrence) in a way that is both a societal detriment, and an individual spiritual and emotional failure.
