NIH Director's stump speech lists stats on how it's hard to be early career & proposes no solution past "elevate new ideas" while he slashes our opportunities. If you're a scientific org inviting him & don't point this out, I'll assume you don't care about us. deevybee.blogspot.com/2026/04/that...
So including for instance elevating elevating the ideas of early career scientists

We have a problem, we have a major problem, right

For for the last 30 years it's gotten worse and worse

Where where you have the time to first- like the age at which you get your first large grant, the age has gone up from the mid-80s was about 35 years old to now it's like in your mid 40s.

We have a biological research ecosystem where you need 1,2,3 postdocs

Early career scientists are the ones who have the newer ideas

and so, like, when you when you elevate the new ideas you allow- essentially empower the institutes to have newer ideas funded, you're automatically organically going to fund early career scientists. You just are.

Anti-vaxxers have long weaponized VAERS, which, as this article notes, is just a repository of *unverified* reports. An adverse reaction found in VAERS is not necessarily indicative of anything, but anti-vaxxers prey on low health and information literacy to sow doubt.

One professor on the watchlist who 404 Media is granting anonymity for his safety said once he was added to the list, he started receiving anonymous letters in his campus mailbox.
''You're everything wrong with colleges,'
'watch your step, we're watching you' kind of stuff," he said, "One anonymous DM on Twitter had a picture of my house and driveway, which was chilling." His president and provost also received emails attempting to discredit him with "all the allegedly communist and subversive stuff I was up to," he said. "It was all certainly concerning, but compared to colleagues who are people of color and/or women, I feel like the volume was smaller for me. But it was certainly not a great feeling to experience that stuff. That watchlist fucked up careers and ruined lives."

This should be the lead story in all major national news outlets. Public health people prefer to stay out of the limelight unless there is no other choice. I can’t overstate how bad things have to be for 9 former CDC directors to band together and pen an op-ed in the NYT warning the entire country.

If any pro-vaccine study did something like this, the anti-vax movement would broadcast it so loud and make it the centerpiece of a documentary. But, bc the anti-vax movement is fundamentally about eugenics and propaganda, they'll just hand-wave it away, play the victim, and move on.

I will never understand why the media feels the need to whitewash RFK Jr constantly. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...
R.F.K., Jr., Anthony Fauci, and the Revolt Against Expertise
Citing evidence, ignoring appeals to authority, reserving judgment, demanding more research—these are potentially exhausting traits in a conversational partner, but they’re also marks of a scientific mind. Rather than being “anti-science,” Kennedy seems enchanted by it. His accusatory book “The Real Anthony Fauci” (2021) is packed with discussions of clinical studies, and it bears a blurb from a Nobel-winning virologist. (Anyone worried about the lack of public appetite for complex writing should contemplate the fact that this nearly five-hundred-page, data-drenched work of nonfiction has sold more than a million copies.) Kennedy has published two books with the subtitle “Let the Science Speak.”

4/ He promotes what sociologists call "intensive parenting," as a superior way to ensure kids are safe. That's a time/labor-intensive & stressful form of parenting many US *mothers* feel pressured to follow due to cultural norms/expectations around mothers as primary caregivers. ...
Screenshot from the NYT article linked in first post of this thread, describes comment by RFK Jr.:

“I would say that we live in a democracy, and part of the responsibility of being a parent is to do your own research,” the health secretary said, in response to a question from a woman in the audience who asked how he would advise a new parent about vaccine safety. “You research the baby stroller, you research the foods that they’re getting, and you need to research the medicines that they’re taking as well.”

There’s just so much shady shit in this story, but this really sticks out. Folks in NLRB’s IT unit were so freaked out by what they saw DOGE doing that they wanted to notify the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Then this happened:
The new revelations about DOGE's activities at the labor agency come from a whistleblower in the IT department of the NLRB, who disclosed his concerns to Congress and the U.S. Office of Special Counsel in a detailed report that was then provided to NPR. Meanwhile, his attempts to raise concerns internally within the NLRB preceded someone "physically taping a threatening note" to his door that included sensitive personal information and overhead photos of him walking his dog that appeared to be taken with a drone, according to a cover letter attached to his disclosure filed by his attorney, Andrew Bakaj of the nonprofit Whistleblower Aid.
