This ro gauze summer kimono has a dramatic composition centered on a powerful carp leaping through stylized waves, rendered with the fluid brushwork and tonal gradations characteristic of classical ink painting tradition. Taisho period (1912-1926), Japan
This ro gauze summer kimono represents a masterful fusion of traditional sumi-e painting techniques with ceremonial textile design, creating a work that transcends mere clothing to become a wearable meditation on natural dynamism and spiritual transformation. The dramatic composition centers on a powerful carp leaping through stylized waves, rendered with the fluid brushwork and tonal gradations characteristic of classical ink painting tradition.

The carp motif carries profound symbolic weight in Japanese culture, representing perseverance, courage, and the potential for spiritual transformation - themes embodied in the legend of the carp that becomes a dragon after successfully swimming upstream and leaping the falls at the Dragon Gate. This makes it an exceptionally appropriate choice for a youth's ceremonial garment, as it embodies aspirations for the wearer's future strength and achievement. The dynamic composition, with the carp's powerful upward thrust breaking through the horizontal wave patterns, creates a sense of movement and energy that speaks to youthful vigor and determination.

Aesthetically, the design demonstrates sophisticated understanding of negative space and compositional balance, with the flowing water rendered in gestural brushstrokes that seem to capture the very essence of liquid movement. The technique of freehand pigment painting on the delicate ro gauze required exceptional skill, as the open weave structure would have made precise control challenging. This technical virtuosity, combined with the garment's larger size suggesting it was worn by an adolescent rather than an infant, indicates this was likely a very special ceremonial piece, perhaps marking a significant coming-of-age milestone during the crucial transition from boyhood to young manhood.

Borage flower embroidered ca.1615-25. Where the central black anthers form a cone, silver threads remain, but the black silk is lost, degraded by iron in the dye, leaving just a pale brown stain and some holes in the linen ground. Victoria and Albert Museum T.13-1956 #FlowersonFriday

The flower grows from and is encircled by a twisting gold stem from which springs a green leaf. Above the centre of the flower the off-white linen ground onto which it was stitched is slightly discoloured, and the material pierced by several tiny holes, showing where stitches once passed through the cloth.

A little collection of dollhouses I drew recently.
The image shows a two-floor building with open walls. On the first floor there's a dining hall. There's a large table and a skeleton sitting at the table. There's a mural with a skeleton and an angel at the back and some arches with candles. On the right, there are two rooms: one is the reception with an arched window and a table behind the window, sofa in front of the window and a large human statue. A ragdoll cat is walking towards the door. Next room is a bedroom. The door to the bedroom has a lock on it. The bride is floating above the bed and a skeleton is looking at her from above the bed frame. In the center, there's a wedding ceremony hall with skeletons sitting on benches, a skeleton standing on a platform in the center reading a book and a groom waiting at the altar. There are murals on the walls with people and skeletons and a big statue of a crying angel. On the second floor, on the left side there are two rooms. At the very left side, there's a room with a broken wall. Birds are flying from an open cage, there's a shelf and some paintings on the wall. A skeleton is popping out of one of the paintings. In the next room, a skeleton is sitting on a chair and a cat is looking at it through a small secret door from the next room. There's a sculpture of an angel behind it. On the right side, there's a dressing room. The bride is sitting at the vanity table looking at her reflection but she sees herself as a skeleton. The room at the far right side extends to the roof. It has two large murals: one shows the groom and the shadow of the bride dancing and another one shows the bride holding a bird with 4 skeletons behind her. There are broken stairs leading upstairs. The wall is broken and there's a large skeleton climbing the wall. Upstairs shows the bride ringing the bells and a large skeleton behind the roof looking at her. Birds are flying in the sky and ribbons and cascading around the roofs. There's a horse on the left and a skeleton with angel wings. The artwork shows a house in the woods. The house is placed in the center and has three floors. It’s surrounded by pines on both sides. There’s a gazebo on the left and a girl is sitting on a blanket near the gazebo offering a squirrel a fruit. There’s a passage made of stones going around the house and leading to a little lake on the right. Here is a swan and some ducks in the lake. On the right side, a girl is sitting on a blanket drawing an owl. On the first floor of the house here are three rooms: an entrance room with two dogs: Saluki and borzoi. They are laying on the floor. In the right there’s a living room connected to kitchen. A woman is sitting on a sofa holding her sleeping son. On the left side there’s a room with stairs leading upstairs. A young lady is walking up the stairs. On the second floor theres a library that extends to the third floor. The library has a mural of a woman on the wall and a ladder. Next to the library there’s a hall with a large mural of a woman with blonde hair. There’s a little nook next to the hall with sofas and a cat sitting on a sofa. Then there’s a bedroom with a bathroom. Upstairs, there’s a patio with a large crooked pine tree and a peacock sitting on a balcony boarder. Then there’s a tea room with floor pillows that leads to an art studio. A boy is playing a flute while sitting on a roof. Herons are flying left above him in the sky. The artwork is mostly neutral in color with much brown, green and beige. The house is drawn in art nouveau style with lots of swirly and floral decorations The image shows a dollhouse artwork of a hotel. The hotel has 4 floors and is decorated in Art Deco style. The first floor has two rooms: a lobby and a tourist information room. In the lobby, a concierge is standing behind the front desk. A lady with a fancy white poodle is walking toward the elevator and a liftman is holding the doors for her. The room has some chairs, art objects and some luggage. Tourist information room has a round desk with a lady standing behind it. There is a table and two guests are sitting near the table. The room has some games and posters with various entertainment locations and events.
Second floor has three rooms: a master suite, a corridor and a smaller room. Master suite shows two rooms with an arch between them. A young man is smoking a cigar while looking away. A lady is holding a book while walking towards the door. The room has patterned walls and various furniture. A large bed is visible behind the arch. In the corridor, a hotel maid is standing next to the room housekeeping cart. On the right side there's a smaller room with yellow walls. A lady standing near the door. There's a big bed behind her with clothes scattered around the bed and the floor and a greyhound dog is stretching next to the bed.
Third floor has two rooms: a corridor and a dining room on the patio. The corridor has a sofa and elongated chairs. A man is standing next to a woman with his hand reaching towards her. A lady is sitting on a sofa. On the patio people are dining. There are three tables in the back and two tables in the front. The roofs of some buildings are visible in the background.
The top floor has one room. The room is a club with a big balcony and large windows. There's a stage in the center with a band performing. Dancers are dancing in front of the stage. Guests are watching the performance while having drinks.
The artwork is mostly dark blue, mustard color and turquoise. The artwork has a patterned frame. The image shows a Victorian style house with different rooms and characters placed around the house. Another large humpback sculpture - this time in a more whimsical colour scheme I've wanted to try for a while! Handmade from coarse paper mache, painted with acrylics, mounted on a wood & metal stand.
A large paper mache humpback whale sculpture photographed against a neutral background. It is painted in blue, turquoise, and purple hues, and has a clouded eye which gives it a mystical, ancient look.

Autumnal leaves cling to their branches against a darkening sky, bringing seasonal change in a mid #1880s silk kimono. This embroidered robe was made in Japan specifically for the Western market, worn informally as a dressing gown #LACMA #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

#ShowMeYourKnits is WIPs this week. I’ve been in production mode for the Pride event I’ll be vending at the weekend after next, so I think that means I should show off the selection of hats I’ve done. The Morse code on these says “love + pride”
A selection of knitted beanies in various Pride flag colors, most of them with black to create morse code colorwork.

I finally get it. When recipes call for 1 clove of garlic they mean this one.
A very big garlic clove. It is 1/3 of the head

Each of the separate components of this gown have survived so that the full effect is possible, from open robe to stomacher to petticoat. Stripes run this way and that in an abundance of fresh greenery, #1770s #philamuseumart #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

Take a break from being depressed that everything you love is being destroyed by slop for a moment and let me tell you about the beautiful symbiotic relationship between graffiti writers, train yard workers, and model train enthusiasts.

#FOFriday 🧶 and I have 2 items this week. A linen stitch cowl/snood in a gorgeous variegated yarn, and my Dragon shawl in harmonious autumnal colours. I love both of these, the dragon scales by @lavishcraft.bsky.social are gorgeous, a really fun knit; the cowl will bring sunshine to a winter's day
