A fascinating (and beautifully illustrated) article on the history of virus research @w-u-r.bsky.social, and in particular of Thung Tjeng Hiang, the world's first professor of virology exhibitions.wur.nl/fascinating-...
An oil painting of Prof T.H. Thung, a middle-aged man from a Chinese background in Dutch academic dress (black gown and white bow tie and bands) against a plain background. He is looking straight at the viewer with a warm and friendly, if thoughtful, expression.

Australia recorded ZERO cases of cervical cancer in women under 25 for the first time since they started tracking the cancer in the 80s. This is the power of vaccines. The HPV vaccine is extremely effective at preventing cancer. Viruses can be oncogenic. Get your vaccines and protect yourself!

In Central America, scientists found a spike in malaria cases after the fungus arrived. As frogs died, there were fewer tadpoles to eat mosquito larvae; more mosquitoes resulted in a fivefold increase in malaria cases: wapo.st/3LHtdAj (gift). We allow extinctions at our peril. 🌎

First, the frogs died. Then people got sick.

It might be worth providing a little more background on what the NIH signature pandemic preparedness programs actually were, because everything in the article is false - e.g., none of the programs had anything to do with "dangerous gain-of-function" research. A little more below.
