Going full mad scientist in my kitchen replicating how the U.S. Army printed orders and maps in the trenches of the Western Front… (Just a very normal research day.)

The state of enterprise security tooling is frankly baffling to me. We're still waiting on <vendor> for macOS 27 support three weeks after launch. They're waiting on <vendor> for SDK support somehow they broke filevault and firewall detection in *27; how I have no idea

it's weird, what things are cheap on Amazon/eBay/Etsy versus McMaster-Carr 3/8" O1 steel rod? Way cheaper from McMaster. (Yes, you'll pay shipping.) And my experience ordering tool steel from Amazon has been Not Great. "Annealed, except for the edges where we used a plasma cutter"

Not that anyone need care about my rule of thumb on this, but: If there is a reasonable chance that you will someday write a performance review or letter of recommendation for a person, you should actively avoid nudity with them. Yes, that constrains managers more than reports. Sorry.

Humaning.
A four-panel comic. In panel 1, a Northern Cardinal and American Goldfinch perch above a busy crowd in a city, looking down. The cardinal says "It's a nice day to go humaning." The goldfinch says "Just look at them. Majestic." In panel 2, a close-up of the two birds. The cardinal says "Nobody tells you that you'll reach a certain age and suddenly get into humaning. I hit 3 years old, and then bam."The birds are looking out over the crowd scene. In panel 3, the cardinal says "Their calls sound funny to us, but each one has a unique meaning." Below, people are saying various things: "I'm tired." "Where's my phone?" "I'd murder a burrito." In panel 4, the birds look down excitedly at a man walking by. The cardinal says "Wait, is that a guy who got dressed in the dark and put his shirt on inside out and backwards?" And the goldfinch exclaims, "Holy... that's a lifer!"

You can believe, or not, that there is an X% chance of AI killing all the humans. But! It's pretty inarguable that AI has made a bunch of things in the world way worse, even while it's made some things better. And it's reasonable to try and find ways to mitigate those harms through regulation

The wildest thing about 9/11 is that if things had gone slightly differently, the hijackers would have been caught beforehand and we would have spent a week clowning on some idiots who thought they could hijack airliners with box cutters and flight sim training and that would've been it

In a lot of ways, the public has too gamified a perception of war but in a weird way, also not enough of one. “Why is my little sister driving fast and lobbing turtle shells at me in Mario Kart?” is clearly a silly question.

Genuinely looking forward to Trump making 35 campaign stops in the last 30 days before midterms to throw his support behind candidates in tight races. This is the most useful thing he could be doing for the country right now; I hope he does even more rallies than that. Can't afford to look weak

UI Rant: If typing in a box generates a dropdown list, once you have started showing items in that list, reordering those items (other than filtering as you continue typing) is not okay. Even if the data are coming in over time and there is a better match that belongs on top

Similarly! Most of the guardrails in agent harnesses (claude code, etc) are _advisory_ in nature. Agents work by executing commands LLMs write. They can and occasionally do ignore harnesses settings like ”manual mode”
