on a whim i decided to look up the derivation of flesch–kincaid readability tests because i wanted to know what the basis of "readability" was given how prevalent the scores are. the formula for both reading ease and grade level is two fractions of words/sentences and syllables/words with constants.

$flesh reading ease formula. 206.835 subtracted by 1.015 times the fraction of words over sentences again subtracted by 84.6 times the fraction of syllables over words.$ $flesh grade level formula. 0.39 times the fraction of words over sentences added with 11.8 times the fraction of syllables over words and then subtracted by 15.59$
