A win for baserow.io over Airtable: I emailed their support and got an email back by an actual human with real, useful information rather than an obviously AI runaround non answer.

After months of roof work at work I am finally back in my office without smells or loud noises and it's so nice. But of course they are doing construction down the hall 😆

[IRS audit despite staff cuts] @potterybyosa I was wondering if this would be the case, and suspected so. Thanks for confirming.

When #AI tools hallucinate citations, their made-up author names are not random. "We show that #LLMs do not merely default to high-probability individual names when generating fictional experts: they produce correlated character ensembles, pairs and trios [of co-authors] whose co-occurrence […]

@Sempf @Shanmonster I was also going to suggest Obsidian. The markdown format is a little fiddly to pick up, but once you get it down, it gets out of the way of the writing process. It really depends on how much formatting one needs, if you use a lot of tables and special formatting (changing […]

If useful, here's my attempt to process my feelings about how I feel sadly kinda — or rather very — sick from all this AI fascist nonsense as an academic. 😶‍🌫️ I'd be pleased if even one person finds something useful because there's something to be said for processing this all together, so, um […]

My secret, Cap, is that I'm *always* angry about old books. For instance, here's a tiny slice of the millions of books 1931-1986 that have no commercial value, that are digitized, but that we're unable to use in large-scale research because they are illegal to share or display.
a tiny random fraction of books in HathiTrust 1931-1980 in English that include the word "philosophy" somewhere in metadata

This is what every analytics report looks like now. More users! More events! But active time on the site keeps going down since bots "read" faster than humans.
A dashboard view of an unknown site
Active Users: 13.8K, up 7.44%
New Users 13.7K, up 7.25%
Avg engagement time 1 second, down -47.7%

What's the best way to collect family tree info to later turn into visualizations/html tables? We have some amazingly detailed messy family trees that live currently in photos of massive white board drawings and I am kind of at a loss as to what to do next.

It's a grim question and one that, obviously, pales into insignificance beside the human cost if this happens, but: what happens to a university's institutional repository when the institution fails/goes bankrupt/closes? Has any university taken digital preservation precautions?

In general it will be the poorest employees this affects, since they also sell an expensive, guaranteed space permit that no one making under $50k can afford. Those spaces sit half empty half the workday. Employee parking passes should be scaled to how much one gets paid

My workplace/university charges $50 to park on campus, but that's only a "hunting license" - it's no guarantee there will be a space available since they oversell. And now they are closing a 300 space lot for a year with no word on any additional spaces added. I am sure glad I live close enough […]
