“I feel very much like we’re going to make something that is a lasting piece of cinema” That’s Tom Cruise on “Digger” … and yet neither he nor Iñárritu have been talking about the movie’s themes, which are pretty pointed. Odd! Anyway maybe he’ll be proven right; anecdotally people seem to like it

“We are long overdue a meaningful, mainstream critical rebuke of the volatile and egocentric ‘great men’ rewarded by our tech-obsessed culture … But how strongly can a major motion picture attack big tech?” I’m also curious what, pop culturally speaking, can move the dial right now. Is it TV/film?

Just a reminder, if you're seeing crochet on clothes at fast-fashion stores and you're not paying a lot for it, the person who did that crochet is not getting paid a lot either. There is no machine-made crochet, unlike knits. A human is doing that with their hands.

Reviews of “The Social Reckoning” are pans for the most part and contrasting it with Sorkin’s script for 2010’s “The Social Network” (for obvious reasons!) where nearly everyone deems the former film some form of brilliant and it’s funny in hindsight that was never my read of it lol. It was … fine?

Person two : The socialism part is where the community came together and fed your kids for free. The capitalism part is where you made them do all the work and stole from them.

Anyway in June of 2025 Disney laid off several hundred employees … and it was not the first round of layoffs that year The reporting sums up the recent history of layoffs at the company and it really makes her chaffing at Shaw’s question all the sillier variety.com/2025/tv/news...
The cuts come just a few months after Disney laid off nearly 200 staffers across its TV and ABC News operations in March, after the company let go 75 across ABC News and local stations in October
2024.

Last September, the company let go about 300 employees across multiple corporate departments, including HR, legal and finance in the U.S.

And in July 2024, Disney pink-slipped about 140 employees in the television division, primarily affecting National Geographic, Freeform and locally owned
TV stations.

Fascinating that when she’s asked about frequent layoffs, she’s taken aback and makes the “snarky” comment, which as a C-suite executive giving public remarks, she should have had more discipline to refrain from 🤷🏻‍♀️ Bloomberg is obviously very business friend so perhaps she expected chummy deference?

One of the bedrock principles about journalistic ethics at most major papers is that people be aware of what they are commenting on. No surprises. Debatably, using your answer from an interview in one context for a story in a completely different context doesn't meet that standard.

If USA Today is indeed unilaterally putting source interviews in some sort of database, in their entirety, allowing them to be cherry-picked by other reporters—and *AI*(!!)—that is journalistically indefensible and no one should ever talk to them again. Is this true? Is it Gannett wide?

Nina Metz @ninametz.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Totally! “I don’t think that’s the project of journalism” is a statement without substance. Good journalism interrogates power (which to be fair, VR has done on occasion) but just “reflecting” the powerful back to us is in fact advertising, O’Harris is absolutely right!
030
Nina Metz @ninametz.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Like, Guidicci just isn’t capable (or willing) to engage with the idea O’Harris has put forth. I think he’s allowed to disagree btw! But he seems like a deer in the headlights and unprepared to bring any kind of intellectual rigor to O’Harris’s premise. He’s really outclassed in this moment

Nina Metz @ninametz.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I tend not like Jeremy O’Harris’s work, or even a lot of his commentary, but he is provocative if nothing else … and I appreciate that he is criticizing the guy who runs Vanity Fair to his face (and he’s not wrong imo) It’s interesting that Guidicci is unable to mount a forceful counter-argument

I also find it … something … when actors say they feel a protectiveness over their characters AFTER the work of playing them is done, when they can afford to be more objective! You don’t have to inhabit this fictional person’s POV anymore, you can stand back and make a judgement about their choices!

The show has created a persuasive alternate reality for nearly 30 yrs It’s fair to wonder if those making the show and profiting from it — from executive producer Dick Wolf on down — wonder if the show’s idealized depictions have undermined our ability to think and talk about how this plays out IRL

I think a lot about how TV portrayals shape our expectations of how things work in real life For ex, a show like "Law & Order: SVU" Olivia Benson (and the actress who plays her) may take allegations of SA seriously. But that's not the reality in many cases, even the NY special victims division!

Digital menstrual tracking is widely promoted to women and girls on social media and by technology companies focused on health and wellness

Menstrual tracking apps claim to inform health and wellness beyong fertility as well as physical fitness and performance goals despite a lack of convincing evidence.

Using digital cycle tracking technologies brings substantial risks to users, including wasted time and labor, unwanted surveillance, risks to health data privacy, potential criminalization and distraction from structural influences on health.

Digital menstrual tracking tools have the potential to reshape understandings of women's health and biology and compound existing inequities that continue to shape menstrual health and wellbeing.

Health practitioners, regulators and the general public must be aware of and work to address the risks of these consumer technologies.

Alix Earle is a 25-year-old “Gen Z influencer” and reality star. Or rather, “star.” For the life of me, I have no idea how she became famous in the first place, but now she has a Netflix show, Earle Meets World. Fun fact about the show and about Alix’s family: her stepmother is Ashley Dupre, aka the prostitute who accidentally brought down her john, then-New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. Isn’t that insane? Ashley is in the Netflix show as well. To promote the show, Alix recently sat for a Q&A session with Interview Magazine and long story short, Alix admitted that she’s “never read a book.” Gen Z really isn’t beating the illiterate allegations.
