really great blog!! i also recommend, if you are making a graphic novel alongside, say, running a patreon or doing small freelance jobs that you calculate your work day as less than 8 hours so that you actually have time to do that other stuff within your work day.

This is such a good article! And as Nila’s says, which I always harp on, do not forget edit/note time! On the writing side, I often end up spending more time on edits (which can happen at any point in the graphic novel process, right up to it being sent to print) than the original draft.

All of this!! And especially 📢INCLUDE TIME FOR EDITS📢 edits are two-pronged: (1) you will wait to receive notes at several stages of the process. could be weeks! could be months! talk with editor so you understand THEIR turnaround (2) once you have notes, you will need time to edit 🙂‍↕️

I also learned you can't always count on your agent to go to bat for you. Agents that lack experience in illustration and comics will not see the red flags. It's in an artist's best interests to document their workflow so they can understand it and protect it fiercely.

The editor works for the publisher, not the artist. If the publisher says a graphic novel must be published in two years, the editor will ask the artist to complete it in one year. If the artist says it's not possible, many editors won't negotiate. They'll find another artist or pull the deal.

I've always tracked my work hours. It really does come in handy when you're pricing and scheduling freelance work! My biggest mistake with graphic novels and traditional publishers, however, was letting the publisher take the lead on establishing the schedule and giving in when we disagreed.

Tracking hours is a project management task. An employer usually does this for you. Authors are not employees. The author to publisher relationship is business to business. There is no one to track hours and establish best practices for authors, so they must do it themselves.
