This is such a good article! And as Nila’s says, which I always harp on, do not forget edit/note time! On the writing side, I often end up spending more time on edits (which can happen at any point in the graphic novel process, right up to it being sent to print) than the original draft.

Do you want to volunteer this midterm but are a big introvert like me? You can write postcards to voters! A handwritten postcard gets much more attention than a glossy mailer. Your local candidates might have postcard writing programs you can sign up for or you can volunteer with postcards4wa.org.

Things that are still the same: People (usually men) saying as a real gotcha: “If it’s DC Super Hero GIRLS, why is Beast Boy there?” I dunno, why is there literally any other character in a book called Batman? Are titles supposed to be fully inclusive of every character?

I have a lot to say about the Cornell case, but I'm largely keeping it on the inside, since I'll be honest: I find it triggering. But I have one specific ask: parents, talk to your sons. Talk to them and make sure they understand accountability. Talk to them about consent. Do it now.

My latest DC Super Hero Girls graphic novel was released this year. The one prior was released in 2019. The first one was released in 2016. The way the industry has changed in ten years is absolutely stunning. First, the comics journalism/review landscape is completely different. Most (if not all)

Hey, ProPublica reporter Jake Pearson here. I’m taking over the account to tell you about my new story. For months, I posed as a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company's "responsible gaming" safeguards. Spoiler alert: They made me a VIP — and I lost $10K. Here's how it all went down. 🧵

If you're putting together an NYCC panel, and need an animation writer/executive producer, a kid's graphic novel writer, or (god forbid) a "woman in comics," I am those things and I have some availability in my schedule. (Also, please don't ask me to be on a "women in comics" panel.)

I'm really glad that Code Switch included this part of my interview, because I think these are the points that so often get lost in the discussion of trans panic and why the WNBA might be an ideal target for those anti-trans groups to latch onto. www.npr.org/2026/09/15/n...

We're talking about actual bigotry and the belief that this group of people shouldn't have, like, the same human rights as another group. It legitimizes them. And so the WNBA is a big platform for them to be able to do that. But I think what's actually really insidious about being the target is that transphobia is rooted in white supremacist ideas of who is allowed to be a woman and what a woman should look like. Those beliefs have, you know, negatively impacted Black and brown and non-Western women throughout history.

So what you have is a league in the WNBA that is full of Black women, 7-foot-tall women, masculine women, women who don't fit kind of the traditional markers of conventional white Western ideas of womanhood. And so I don't think it's surprising that transphobic ideas around the acceptable kind of woman are coming and impacting this league.

And I think the last piece that I will say is, I think, in some ways, the lack of visibility that the league had for a lot of years really protected it. Like, it wasn't as successful as it should have been because of racism and homophobia and misogyny. And once it becomes successful, the flip side of that is it really does become a different kind of victim of those ideas. And the fact that you have a league that is all women, predominantly Black women, largely queer women who have been successful and they don't need men to do it, and their product is not necessarily for men. I think that's a threat to the status quo. And so it's not just about protecting women's sports. It's actually about dismantling them from the inside.

For anyone unfamiliar, here are some basic terms to help you get started on your comic book addiction (correct me if I’m off with any of these gang):

1. Pull list- a list you make with your local comic book store of all the ongoing series and upcoming books, or even anything you want in the future made by a specific person (so you don’t have to keep calling for the same series etc.) and you pick it all up as it comes out.
2. FOC- “Final Order Cutoff” the last day to preorder a comic book with a shop or online- after that, you take the chance they’ll run out of extras when it comes out.
3. Trade- a collection of single issues into a bound paperback
4. Graphic novel- a bound paperback or hardcover comic made just for that format (no single issue chapters)
