Interesting little heated stone arrangement with lots of charcoal and limpets very low in the stratigraphy of Priory Midden. Just the stuff they found at Cnoc Coig but the previous dig stopped 5 cm short of it. Whoops! Excavated by the amazing @hugowhymark.bsky.social 🏺

Spatial differences show that the cave skews towards summer collection, while the Paralia (beach) settlement is strongly winter (62%). The cave seems to have shifted from a general shelter in the Mesolithic to a warm-season refuge only once people built structures nearby to spend the winter in.

Many seasonality studies use a few dozen shells, because oxygen-isotope work is slow and costly. LIBS Mg/Ca mapping lets us run 180 specimens fast and at high resolution, AND at virtually no cost. That scales up sample sizes and changes which questions you can ask of the site.

We were lucky enough to have Alexandria Firenzi from @unevadareno.bsky.social to visit our lab @leizarchaeology.bsky.social and study Mg/Ca in mussel shells. Sorting out this species should open up research on HEAPS of new sites in the Pacific! 🏺🐚🧪

All packed up! Now it's time to get to the lab: A stone with lipid residue wants testing (don't have many of those in the Mesolithic), lots of charcoal samples, and heaps of shells for LIBS-analysis. Stay tuned or come see our poster at #MESO2025 in Ferrara. 🏺 #CnocCoig @leizarchaeology.bsky.social

Didn't expect this in my delivery of epoxy resin... I was hoping that a negative discount means flatearthers pay more (which would be hilarious), but alas, it does actually reduce the price...

This week was another 🏺 sampling week for our SEAFRONT project. it wasn't as exciting as Sicily or Croatia seafront-project.com/post/autumn-... but the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Cambridge was on the ball with laying out samples for me in such a nice way.
