In Lyminster there’s a pond known as knucker hole. It is said to be bottomless. If you dive in you’ll land in Australia. It’s home to a water creature, the knucker. #wyrdwednesday

‘If you catch a falling leaf, you will have twelve months of continued happiness' Dip in beeswax to make a garland. The beeswax is a pain to melt, but the scent fills the house and the leaves last for ages. #FolkloreThursday

This is sad to read, both for the Goulds and our local area. I visited Diane a few years ago to interview her about her other life as a Pearly Queen but also enjoyed looking round Furnace Brook where they were working hard to create an environmental haven.

When young Thomas Chowne of Alfriston and his dog were killed by robbers on White Way, the ghost of a white dog was said to appear every seven years. Their bones were found during roadworks and moved to the church graveyard. No reported sightings have been made since. #wyrdwednesday

‘Ye bells of Bosham, ring for me, For as ye ring, I ring wi’ ye’ 🔔 Legend says Vikings stole the tenor bell from Bosham church, but as they set sail their ship sank. The bell was lost to the sea and is still heard to ring from beneath the waves. #wyrdwednesday #folklore

The story goes… St Dunstan was doing smithy work one day when a seductive young maiden came to him. He wasn’t tricked and bid her come closer. Then he took his tongs from the fire and grabbed her by the nose, whereupon the Devil’s true form was revealed. #wyrdwednesday #folklore

The belief is very common... that violent grieving for the dead will prevent their resting in their graves in peace. There is a song called The Unquiet Grave, which turns on this belief. (1868) ‘Oh who sits weeping on my grave And will not let me sleep?’ #wyrdwednesday rest

I’ll be joined by David Tomlins to play at 12 on Sunday, part of Treebourne’s day of music and nature. It’s being held at Sevenoaks Rec, home to the woodland they planted in 2021. Treebourne have planted 10,000 trees on this site alone and many more around the town, I think 39,000 so far.💚

As it’s St George’s Day I thought I’d share a local dragon legend… Jacqueline Simpson (The Folklore of Sussex) tells the story of the Lyminster knucker. I went to Lyminster a number of years ago to try and find the knuckerhole. The illuminated stained glass window is situated inside St Mary’s.

Nightjar making a comeback ✨ Some local lore from 1868 … also known as the fern-owl, goatsucker, the puck bird or puck; it probably received the name from a belief that it is a mischievous sprite, which inflicts on calves and heifers a disease here called the ‘puck complaint’
