New preprint led by Zoe Rudnick: bramble 🌿 RNA-seq quantification makes you pick a side. Align to the transcriptome and your quantifier is happy, but reads from unannotated transcripts get misassigned to annotated ones. Align to the genome and you keep discovery, but limit quantification choices.

No surprise. Researchers with greater scientific impact are less happy academic.oup.com/rev/article/... Conclusion should be obvious but evidence is here: higher impact correlated with poor work-life balance. Prosocial motivation and creativity mitigate the effect, but only in tenured faculty.

Comic. [Two people with tiny star floating above display on table.] PERSON 1 with ponytail: Now, your grandmother said this was a relic low-mass population III star, from the first generation of stars. Unfortunately, the high iron content shows that it formed much later, after several rounds of supernovas. I’m afraid it’s a population I star. PERSON 2: Aw, darn. Well, it still has sentimental value. [banner for Antiques Roadshow]

Let’s be clear here, when scientists say mistakes were made at the start of the pandemic, we DO NOT mean that we did too much. We mean not socially distancing quickly enough, not making tests widely available, and not acknowledging COVID is airborne and distributing N95 masks to everyone.
