The beautiful Dom In Orange from @kristinhersh.bsky.social new album seems to have a melodic echo of her song Bo Diddley Bridge

The Primevals' Sound Hole (1986) still sounds great 40 years later. Underappreciated, I think, few of my friends had this LP, even though they were into REM, Rain Parade, Green On Red, Dream Syndicate etc. Another band I first heard through Peel, who I think played Primitive ahead of a Peel Session

Second listen to the new @kristinhersh.bsky.social album today, on the bus home, on headphones. Depending how you cut it, it's about the 27th album since I first heard Peel play Vicky's Box in 1986. I don't know how but every album seems to be its own distinctive, self-contained world. Brilliant.

Hard to choose one, but I'll go for Wilson Harris's 1959 novella, Palace Of The Peacock, a short but densely-layered, image-rich ghost story that alternately drifts and plunges down a Guyanese river towards a transcendent and lysergic conclusion. Influenced by Yeats and published by Eliot. Wonderful

I rewatched Compartment No.6 last night and enjoyed it even more second time round. An understated and involving Finnish/Russian train film that leaves a lot unsaid and feels extremely convincing, based on a novel. It's on iplayer but disappearing inside a month, apparently.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVFh... The Blue Aeroplanes have always meant a lot to me. Listening to Friendloverplane opened my mind to what pop music could be and seemed to combine a love of VU and primitivist rock with a genuinely poetic/avant sensibility. Thrilling when I was 19 + still hits today

Just watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, released the year I was born and a childhood favourite, and realising that at the time of filming, Lionel Jeffries, who plays the grandfather, was 15 years younger than I am now

I enjoyed The Eleventh Hour, a collection of 5 short to shortish stories about old age and death by Salman Rushdie,a writer I read a lot of when I was young (and who had a big influence on my developing tastes) but who I haven't returned to for decades. Not perfect, but adventurous and memorable.

Saw The Odyssey yesterday. I won't comment on the film at all, except to say that the action sequences were so painfully loud that I had my fingers in my ears and still had a headache a couple of hours afterwards.

The Green Sea - I found this quietly beaitiful Greek film (not to be confused with an Irish one of the same name) surprisingly affecting and almost painterly in its use of composition and colour. Hidden away somewhere on Netflix 👍

Finished Elizabeth Harrower's debut novel, Down In The City, today. Toxic co-dependency, class and suburban claustrophobia in post-war Sydney. All four of her early novels are excellent and while The Watch Tower is the most renowned, my favourite was The Long Prospect. @textpublishing.bsky.social

I just reread Julian Fuks' Resistance before reading the loosely connected sequel Occupation, both from @charcopress.com, a great indie that specialises in Latin/Spanish translations. A Brazilian journalist whose parents fled Argentinian dictatorship, Fuks brilliantly blends the personal/political.

Some musicians leave behind a small body of work that feels so intensely important and personal, and while simultaneously fading from public view, seems to become more exciting and more compelling to me as the years/decades pass. Ultra Vivid Scene is the example that prompted this today.

I finished La Bête Humaine today, my 9th Zola novel, and an absolute bloodbath! Besides Zola's usual stuff about human nature and genetic predisposition to crime + violence, there is a lot about railways/industrialisation, corruption in law/government, and the plight of women and the working class.

Another gem from the one and only Magnus Mills. Self-publishing these days, but hopefully still reaching his audience. For me and a couple of fellow travellers I know, a new Mills novel is an instant method of relieving us of some cash.

NB this is part of how this is going. The idea that non-white people, whether British, or those fleeing harm, should be treated with dignity has gone from consensus, to debated, to an afterthought, and is sliding all the way over to counter-consensus. bsky.app/profile/pete...

South Korean artist Chung Sang-Hwa has died at 93. He was a central figure in the Dansaekhwa genre, a monochromatic painting style that emphasized a minimalist, repetitive take on modern abstraction. #RIPChungSangHwa Untitled (1979) by Chung Sang-Hwa
