Hoshi-wajo standing wooden statue. 11th century, Japan. The wooden flesh of his forehead and nose splits open like a parting curtain, unveiling the calm, serene face of a Bodhisattva emerging from within the mortal shell. In his right hand, raised in a gentle gesture of instruction
Carved from a single block of timber, a monk standing in solemn monastic robes reveals a miraculous inner metamorphosis through a deep vertical cleft down the center of his head and face. The wooden flesh of his forehead and nose splits open like a parting curtain, unveiling the calm, serene face of a Bodhisattva emerging from within the mortal shell. In his right hand, raised in a gentle gesture of instruction, and his left hand, holding a slender ritual water vase (suibin), the figure exudes a quiet, poised presence. The aged surface of the sculpture is etched with deep vertical wood grain, tool marks, and age-worn fissures that catch dramatic, directional light, capturing the physical tension between the outer human countenance and the divine radiance hidden within.
Dating to 11th-century Heian-period Japan, this extraordinary wooden sculpture depicts Hōshō Wajō (the Chinese monk Baozhi, 418–514 CE), a renowned Buddhist master of the Southern Liang Dynasty celebrated for his eccentric wisdom and miraculous deeds. According to Japanese Buddhist folklore recorded in collections such as the Konjaku Monogatarishū, when Emperor Wu of Liang sent court painters to capture the monk's portrait, Baozhi used his fingers to rend open the skin of his face, revealing the Eleven-Headed Guanyin (Jūichimen Kannon) beneath to demonstrate that true Buddhahood cannot be captured by superficial physical likeness. Sculpted in the ichiboku-zukuri (single-block wood carving) technique, this work represents a pinnacle of Japanese religious monozukuri (artisanal mastery), translating a literary legend of spiritual transfiguration into a startling, physical masterpiece of sacred art.

"Ghost with a Sword" (also widely known as "The Snow Woman" or "Spirit of a Female Samurai"). It is a famous color woodblock print created circa 1922–1923 by the pioneering Japanese artist Uemura Shōen (1875–1949).
Rendered in a ghostly profile, the figure’s luminous silhouette emerges from the gloom, her flowing white hair and ethereal robes merging seamlessly with the falling snow in a technique reminiscent of mōrōtai (the "indistinct" or atmospheric style). In her pale hands, she cradles a gold-hilted short sword (tantō) with a delicate black cord trailing into the void, creating a sharp, tactile focal point amidst the surrounding softness. The contrast between her dark, tragic features—drawn with the gaunt, sorrowful delicacy of classical Noh theater ghost masks like Yase-onna—and the soft radiance of her body imbues the phantom with an aura of intense emotional restraint and otherworldly detachment.

Created circa 1922–1923 by Uemura Shōen (1875–1949), this rare print showcases the artist’s profound engagement with Japanese theater and spectral literature alongside her celebrated Nihonga masterworks. As the first woman awarded Japan’s Order of Culture, Shōen transformed the traditionally male-dominated bijin-ga genre by imbuing her female subjects with psychological gravity and spiritual dignity. While Shōen is best remembered for her elegant depictions of everyday historic life, her explorations of the supernatural—most famously exemplified by her 1918 masterpiece Honō (Flame)—allowed her to examine deep psychological states of jealousy, grief, and unfulfilled longing. Here, whether interpreted as a vengeful Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman) or the lingering spirit of an onna-musha (female warrior), the blade functions less as a weapon than as a sacred talisman of resolve and tragic memory, bridging the physical world of steel and the ethereal realm of snow.

Technically, the print relies on masterly woodblock execution to achieve its painterly, luminous effects. The carvers and printers utilized delicate bokashi (hand-wiped color gradations) to form the soft, glowing aura around the figure’s spine and head, setting her against a deep grey sky.
