Today I found out that Umberto Eco crafted a version of this meme in the 1980s…
Beware the
alibi of photocopies ! Photocopies are indis-
pensable instruments. They allow you to keep with you a text you have already read in the library, and to take home a text you have not read yet. But a set of photocopies can become an alibi. A student makes hundreds of pages of photocopies and takes them home, and the manual labor he exercises in doing so gives him the impression that he possesses the work. Owning the photocopies exempts the student from actually reading them. This sort of vertigo of accumulation, a neocapitalism of information, happens to many. Defend yourself from this trap: as soon as you have the photocopy, read it and annotate it immediately. If you are not in a great hurry, do not photocopy something new before you own (that is, before you have read and annotated) the previous set of photocopies. There are many things that I do not know because I photocopied a text and then relaxed as if I had read it.

yes, actually, we know for a fact that the brain doesn’t shut down between ”requests” and in fact has continuity of function even when there is essentially zero external stimuli and that there isn’t a configurable “memory” app feeding a growing pile of context to each “request”

I know this'll ruffle feathers but I agree with this Food/Water watch analysis. Diverting renewable energy away from fossil phase-out and climate adaptation and towards melting graphics card to power chatbots is the formal end of moral purpose for clean technology.
Data Centers With Renewables Aren’t the Answer
So all these power plants and “temporary” turbines are raising power prices and polluting our communities. Why don’t we just power data centers with renewables?

Many data center companies are pledging to (eventually) do just that. But even if these pledges weren’t just empty greenwashing promises, powering data centers with clean energy is utterly unrealistic. It also threatens the progress of our already dangerously slow energy transition.

Continuously powering a 1 GW data center would require nearly 20,000 acres of solar panels or 185,000 acres of onshore wind power. We cannot afford to waste the time, space, or money to build renewables for Big Tech’s profit machines.

Already, data center growth is outstripping available renewable energy supply and redirecting renewables from other industries. It’s drawing urgently needed renewables from existing technologies and resources. We need to focus our renewable energy resources toward thos

What needs to be worried about is that your future work will be lossily compressed into some org's language model to which all the compensation and credit will go. There is plenty to be worried about, but it's not inanimate objects, it's their operators and the system they're enabling.

Hahahhahahaahah But that's bitter laughter. This admission, especially coming from the biggest SpaceX/Musk mark, means the future of HSF is hanging by a thread. At least it comes before any irreversible decisions have yet been taken - now if only the mass delusion in spaceflight crumbled at last.
Berger admitting ("Yes") that Starship will likely never be fully crew-rated or crew-capable in the foreseeable future, despite everything in the current spaceflight environment and general US administration favoring Musk and his companies.

Question from "Owen Lewis": "Could humans launch on Starship? Eventually, but this seems unlikely before the mid-2030s, and docking the large Starships to smaller space stations would be challenging" (quoting Berger's article). Second part makes sense. Do you really think it will take another decade for humans to fly on Starship?"
Answer from Berger: "Yes".
