Today I found out that Umberto Eco crafted a version of this meme in the 1980s…
Beware the
alibi of photocopies ! Photocopies are indis-
pensable instruments. They allow you to keep with you a text you have already read in the library, and to take home a text you have not read yet. But a set of photocopies can become an alibi. A student makes hundreds of pages of photocopies and takes them home, and the manual labor he exercises in doing so gives him the impression that he possesses the work. Owning the photocopies exempts the student from actually reading them. This sort of vertigo of accumulation, a neocapitalism of information, happens to many. Defend yourself from this trap: as soon as you have the photocopy, read it and annotate it immediately. If you are not in a great hurry, do not photocopy something new before you own (that is, before you have read and annotated) the previous set of photocopies. There are many things that I do not know because I photocopied a text and then relaxed as if I had read it.

yes, actually, we know for a fact that the brain doesn’t shut down between ”requests” and in fact has continuity of function even when there is essentially zero external stimuli and that there isn’t a configurable “memory” app feeding a growing pile of context to each “request”

LLMs, focusing on just the tech, are unarguably useful. As are translators using LLM's transformer roots. Unlike machine translators, their true cost is prohibitive: such projects wouldn't be feasible without heavily subsidized access to supercomputers, paid for by huge, problematic externalities.

Yutu-2 traversed >1.6 km, not 100m, and was still mobile as of late 2025, not 2024. Zhurong also roved a similar amount on Mars and isn't listed. Jinchan (Chang'e-6) probably roved around 100m too and isn't listed... What a strange infographic!

This is what "AI" should be used for, and what supercomputers (now known as "data centers") have always been used for. Of course, given a transformer-based model achieved this, now they try to spin it as if all uses of such models are equivalent - including LLMs. So little honesty, so tiring...

All true - but: NET value? Burning mummies as train fuel also provided "value" (train ran!), but it wasn't worth it, because the net value was profoundly negative. Supercomputers have value. Transformer NNs are great tech. Most of their uses are not worth their expense.

Maybe pass your texts through the LLMs, cause I for one cannot make out what you're actually talking about. I'd be wary of a (computational!) tool that can't spell but can solve "exotic" puzzles. Of course, enough coaxing, prodding and fiddling with a supercomputer will yield *something*.

Sth caught my eye: It looks like the expanded oval at the beginning shrinks a little as time progresses, while there lingers a less bright "halo" that appears to "flow" out and around, almost like the previously ionized air is getting dragged/mixed by currents. Is that accurate or an illusion?

So between 30 and 52 tonnes (I find🤢estimates of 1.2 to 2 tonnes per v3 Starlink bird) for the lowest possible injection orbit? That's... again very low. Entirely possible it's not launching at full load, but that's at most half of "SS V3" supposed P/L capacity. Likely less than fully reusable FH 🤫

Ok - but there should be an English equivalent to the Spanish "estadounidense" (also Italian statiunitense), which could be used with no significant weirdness involved. I mean, "American" should be just as obnoxious as using "Asian" specifically for Chinese or "European" for just the French.

I know this'll ruffle feathers but I agree with this Food/Water watch analysis. Diverting renewable energy away from fossil phase-out and climate adaptation and towards melting graphics card to power chatbots is the formal end of moral purpose for clean technology.
Data Centers With Renewables Aren’t the Answer
So all these power plants and “temporary” turbines are raising power prices and polluting our communities. Why don’t we just power data centers with renewables?

Many data center companies are pledging to (eventually) do just that. But even if these pledges weren’t just empty greenwashing promises, powering data centers with clean energy is utterly unrealistic. It also threatens the progress of our already dangerously slow energy transition.

Continuously powering a 1 GW data center would require nearly 20,000 acres of solar panels or 185,000 acres of onshore wind power. We cannot afford to waste the time, space, or money to build renewables for Big Tech’s profit machines.

Already, data center growth is outstripping available renewable energy supply and redirecting renewables from other industries. It’s drawing urgently needed renewables from existing technologies and resources. We need to focus our renewable energy resources toward thos

The U.S. leads with 3,960 data centers, the largest footprint in the dataset.
That’s more data centers than the next 14 countries combined.
Europe clusters heavily (UK, Germany, France lead), while Asia’s footprint is growing (China, India, Japan).
