Prison abolition is one of those issues where you see a ton of bitter arguments between people who basically agree on the principles but disagree over implementation and feasibility, meanwhile most of the country is people who think prison is soft and should have more ironic punishments and torture

this is a very thoughtful and nuanced piece. i think this paragraph is especially important to keep in mind. a lot of people are talking about geller as if he has spent the last ten years doing his best to atone for what he did, or asking if ten years of "good work" can outweigh one rape.

Regardless of whether or not you believe that rapists should not have to disclose their histories of sexual violence to their co-workers, I don't think Geller should have agreed to collaborate with me - especially for a video about James Franco - knowing that I've often written about living as a survivor of sexual violence (which I assume he knew because he knew of me and it was the subject of my most popular essay). I feel as though I was a small link in a larger chain of survivors used - deliberately or not - as props in a greater project of image rehabilitation. Every collaboration Geller did with an outspoken victim of sexual assault helped to legitimize his public image, and it seems none of us were given the choice of making an informed decision whether or not to support that project. While it's possible that Geller has deconstructed, his actions don't align with the argument that he's spent the last decade "accounting."

I highlighted the end of her paragraph “I told him I was disappointed and he flipped out, dumped the cake on the street, cancelled our hotel, and drove us 4 hours home in the dark.”
