A somewhat maximalist, very collage-heavy experiment piece this month, using a lot of my photography and some old Slovenian art
Digital collage and painting on vertical canvas
Theme: Fantasy / Dark fantasy / Experimental
Character: My OC Lubi (he/him, transmasc) and a skeleton
#Artsky #QueerArt #TransArt #DarkFantasy #SwordAndSorcery

This piece is almost entirely composed of photographs I took. It features a central long corridor that disappears into the darkness, every side of it a different texture. The left and right walls are photos of old walls, the ceiling is wood, and the floor is an enlarged photo of a gingerbread cookie I bought in a Polish shop in Ljubljana once, overlaid with an assortment of Turkish delight from Lidl. I've had these two photos for like 3 years and I'm so happy to finally put them to use lmao

In the front, slightly left stands a knight, who was traced with a lasso tool over a relief sculpture from Celje. He's wearing a dark armour with very colourful accents on skirt and flag, and his head is a fire. On his knee guards, one can spot a unicorn and a stag beetle in trans flag colours.

In the upper right corner, a dragon's head is sticking out of a wall, the fire it breathes joining in with the knight's fire hair. For this head I used a photo from an ornament on one of the 'healing springs' near my hometown. It's coloured in somewhat garish colours that reoccur across the picture, magenta, aqua, green and blue, and notably three of its fangs depict the white, pink and blue or the trans flag.

Lastly, underneath the head stands a skeleton, cut from the famous Danse Macabre fresco from the Holy Trinity Church in Hrastovlje. The skeleton is orange with green shadows, and splashes of magenta on some parts of its body.

Inland harvest - Miadon`s pact
In the spiraling bowels of cybernetic depths, two formerly forms , distraught thoughts overwhelmed by the nihilistic oblivious weight of the machinations and dealings of those who aspire to spread the dread, looking for inspiration, A sort internal divination in the wired came to a thoughtful conclusion of becoming symbiotic in form and function; they melded, acting of a sleuth like nature to discover and weed out these whispers of self-fulfilling prophetic nihilism. as they lived and breathed, they encountered many alleys and enemies alike and cultivated the inner unity theyve experienced, now fully married to the pact, one monstrous and hulking with blackened ichor at their heart acting as sensory, another fluid and gelatinous holding a grand scythe and flowing flesh acting as the cerebral, they endlessly roam the endless wired, never sated for the hypothetical delusions they must tirelessly confront.

Another melancholic Ire, but pink this time, which it superior
Digital illustration on vertical canvas
Theme: Fantasy / Dark fantasy / Experimental
Character: My OC Ire, he/him,
#Artsky #QueerArt #DarkFantasy #SwordAndSorcery

This piece features predominantly pink and lilac hues. In central composition it depicts a warrior (Ire), resting his green war axe on the ground next to him, with one leg on a slightly higher ledge than the other. He's wearing a black/grey sleeveless shirt and a colourful loin cloth in green, red, pink and blue. His body is of a pink colour, while his face is green with red and black markings and two horns on his forehead. His hair (depicted with only a flat black shape) is long and black, sticking out in the back like red-tipped quills. His expression is grim.

In the background we see a foggy sky with a partially clouded rising sun, and a brief view of mountains on the left.

The ground Ire stands on is grey and purple, while behind we can see a shock of tall blue grass. On the right of the foreground is a cluster of pink and blue flowers with pointed petals.

Overall the painting has a very painted look, and an applied texture to mimic a slightly weathered book cover.

Style study 4/4 - Frank Frazetta The finale! It was hard to mimic a traditionally painted style in Paint Tool SAI, and while it did turn out better than I expected, it's definitely not as close a match as the previous studies. A lot of thoughts about this one in alt text!
The work process of this felt very odd. My goal was authenticity, so I used many references for different parts of the painting. I'd paint the ground first start to finish, using some of his paintings with matching ground style as reference. Then I'd paint the knee, and use a bunch of his paintings with a similarly positioned knee, etc. Basically every different bit was fully painted before I went on to the next one. That's exactly what fake drawing tutorials on old deviantART looked like lmfao.
This took two weeks, not because of the process (actually very fun), I just had a lot of other things going on. Sadly the frustration with the long work did really get to me, which ended up with some very unhappy hours towards the end.

A few parts kinda break my immersion here, aside from it being clearly digital. Big one being that the character feels too specific. When I look at Frank's work, unless it's Conan or his OC do not steal Death Dealer, I always get the feeling that I am looking at a somewhat vague warrior figure, but Ire's design very distinct, which is not what I'd expect to see in Frazetta's works. Recognizable character designs in S&S feel more within Whelan's realm. Another bit where I think I failed a little is that the axe is too fine and smooth and loses some of that chunkier painting style he's known for.

Digital painting in style of Frank Frazetta depicting a shirtless, green axe-holding warrior standing on rocky ground against a light background. The foreground is darker and detailed, while behind is foggy blue cliff, a yellow-orange sky and a partially clouded white sun.

The character wears a furred loin cloth and tall sandals. His body is white and his head is brown with distinct markings and 2 black horns. His black hair is waving in the wind. My signature is in the bottom left corner, mimicking the shape of Frazetta's.

Style study 3/4 - Mike Mignola From all the studies, I probably learned the most from this one, and Mignola's use of heavy black shadows and simple shapes was a delight to try out. More thoughts in alt text!
I really enjoyed working on this one. I admit that Mignola is an artist that like.. I have been aware of for a long time, but until this I never really looked at the larger body of his work. I especially love the heavy use of black in this style (I read Frazetta was a big inspiration for him and it shows lmao). With my piece, I really enjoy how I stylized Ire's hair and axe. There was almost a therapeutic simplicity to working in this style, similarly to the Tartakovsky one. Fantastic shapes.
Colour was a slightly trickier element for this, but I think I ended up with a fairly Mignola-ish palette. Speaking of colour, or lack thereof, I've been meaning to develop my black & white art more, and studying Mignola's work feels like it'll give me some good insight for that!

Digital drawing done in the style of Mike Mignola (Hellboy). It features a heavy use of flat black shadows, placing Ire into what seems like a cave tunnel. He appears to be walking through a rough, rocky terrain. The piece has a black, red, green and orange palette.
Ire is holding his green axe in his right hand. The right arm is entirely blacked out, only highlighting three red scars, but the part of the axe that reaches into the shadow of the background is silhouetted in bright green.
Ire is wearing a green tank top and a red loin cloth fastened by a studded belt. His hair is long and black, with thick strands looking almost like tendrils. His body is white, while his face is brown with red and black markings. Two small black horns extend from his head.

Style study 2/4 - The Legend of Vox Machina. I thought it would be fun and easy to do one of the studies in a more 'conventional' style, but the result is a bit dull compared to the rest, and also it was revealed to me that thin clean lines are the devil. Process details in alt text
The body match for this one was Grog, but it took me ages to find the correct arm positions to reference. With a style that relies on thin lines and very proper anatomy, it becomes really obvious if anything is a little off (especially in a still shot), so this was actually a loooooot harder than I thought it would be. I did a few passes for different palettes before I settled on this one. The background here is a straight repainting of a background from the show, but to add a little of my own touch, I edited in one of my own photos of the sky. I spent. well over an hour trying to get just the right amount of fuzz to the image to make it look like a screenshot of an actual show lmao. I tried a lot of different types of image corruption before finally settling on this one. It was useless asking friends which looks more convincing because none of them saw the differences i saw LMAO

Digital drawing done in the style of Legend of Vox Machina (Phil Bourassa). It depicts Ire with one hand on his hip and the other holding a green, black-edged axe over his shoulder. Style study 1/4 - Samurai Jack This was an easy one, I've done Samurai Jack style before and it was just as fun now as it was then. Process details in alt text!
The first thing I do for style studies is to find a character that looks the most similar to mine anatomy-wise. For Ire, that body match was Da Samurai. I closely referenced an existing Samurai Jack background to keep it stylistically accurate. Genndy Tartakovsky's style was a strong influence on mine so it was really a breeze, especially being as cartoony and lineless as it is.

Most Samurai Jack screenshots I found had a very distorted image, like an old VHS, so I wanted to mimic that too for extra authenticity. Thankfully I didn't need to figure out my own way of doing this, as I know of a website that provides this exact filter; HEISEI-VHS

IMAGE DESCRIPTION:
Character: Ire (OC, he/him)
#Artsky #QueerArt #DarkFantasy #SwordAndSorcery

Digital drawing done in a cartoony, flat lineless style of Samurai Jack (Genndy Tartakovsky). It depicts a warrior standing at the ready with a green, black-edged axe in his hands. The character is wearing a dark tank top and a red, yellow and purple furred skirt. His body is white, while his face is brown with distinct markings. Two large black horns extend from his head, blending into the long black hair which grows into long spikes in the back.

He is standing against a purple and red background, also done in a very stylized and lineless aesthetic.
My signature is depicted in form of a Cartoon Network logo in the bottom left corner.

If you're reading the Elric books and you encounter something that isn't explained in detail, you say "What?" and then "Haha that little scamp" and then you keep reading! That's half the fun! There's a whole world implied that you don't have access to! Which is GOOD!

I think just more nuance, more ambiguity, less neatness/black-and-white thinking, more messiness, more complexity, moving parts, undefined edges. (And readers who don't whine about encountering it, but that's proving too much to hope.)
