City’s logic? “A lion is a type of cat & thus…constitutes a pet. The regulation ... does not include any exception or threshold based on the size of the cat. The fact that a lion may be large does not remove the animal from the category of ‘cat.’” www.bostonglobe.com/2026/09/29/m...

Newton NIMBYs demand more parking next to the T, because everyone must be saddled with a car.
1186 Walnut St- New 35 unit apartment building with 9 parking spaces being proposed

A new 35 unit apartment building with parking for 9 cars is being proposed for the former gas station building located at 1186 Walnut St in Newton Highlands. This property was sold in 2017 for $1,930,000 and resold on 8/18/26 for $2.6 million.

The 10k sq ft lot has been utilized as overflow parking for O’Hara’s restaurant customers during off peak hours with the permission of whomever owned this property over the past decades. During the pandemic O’Hara’s was able to set up an outdoor restaurant at this site.

The developer who is proposing this new 35 unit “affordable” apartment building with only 9 parking spaces will be speaking at the next Newton Highlands Area Council meeting which is taking place this Thursday, Oct 1st at 7pm. Please reach out to Alison Haran at 617-653-5322 for more details.

There is an effort underway to overturn Newton’s overnight parking ban. There are thousands of apartments in various stages of construction throughout Newton right now. Much of this new housing development has been approved without adequate parking to accommodate the residents who will be residing in these new apartment buildings. If the overnight parking ban is overturned then people will be able to park in front of Newton homes and on City streets year round which has historically not been allowed. Some people fear that their trash barrels will be blocked from sanitation truck pick up plus that their driveways will be blocked by illegally parked cars if this is allowed to occur.

What are your thoughts? Do you like the idea of apartment buildings being built without enough parking spaces for the residents to have at least one car? Would you be able to live in one of these new buildings without a vehicle based on the current public transportation that is available in Newton?

Federal Law Enforcement Actions Outside City Hall

Today, federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducted enforcement actions outside of the Newton District Court and then in front of Newton City Hall.

Based on the information we have at this time, ICE agents detained, and took into custody, an individual outside of the Newton District Court. Simultaneously, a motor vehicle driven by an acquaintance of the detained individual was followed away from the Newton District Court and was stopped by ICE agents in front of Newton City Hall. The acquaintance was then detained.

While this incident was unfolding, the Newton Police Department received a 911 phone call from a bystander alerting them to the incident at Newton City Hall. Upon arriving at the scene, the officers of the Newton Police Department maintained order and remained on scene until the detained acquaintance was released by the ICE agents and all parties dispersed.

I commend the response of our Newton Police Department and our City Hall staff. The efforts of our team were textbook across the board, and it is exactly the balance of professionalism and empathy that I know our community expects and appreciates.

Newton is a welcoming community and as such we pride ourselves in being a City that values every person.

I would like to express my strong support for our immigrant community. If you are an immigrant living, working, raising a family, running a business in Newton, or simply visiting our city, please know that we value you. We care about you, and you are part of our community.

Anyone seeking assistance or additional information is encouraged to either contact Newton City Hall at 617-796-1000, or visit the City's website at https://www.newtonma.gov/government/immigration-rights-resources

Unpopular opinion on the Berkeley bike lane dustup: pedestrianizing California St. between Hopkins & Ada St. would be better than a bike lane for all users, including bikers. And it would require nothing more than paint, signage, & 2-3 large potted plants or saw horses.
