I wrote up some thoughts about the effect of AI on programmer salaries: seldo.com/posts/ai-eff...
A hastily sketched graph of programmer salaries on the X axis, and # of programmers on the Y axis, with two lines: a "before" distribution and an "after" distribution. The "before" distribution has a higher average salary, but there are less of them. The "after" distribution includes the entire "before" but is much larger, although with a lower average.

Over the past few months, I've gotten about a half dozen offers to do interviews for remote jobs, after which a team of people would do the actual work and I would be paid 50% of the salary. For someone trying to run a real remote company, it's infuriating.

I’m not giving money to Democratic incumbents unless there’s a plan and it isn’t the usual bullshit.

One of my biggest mental breakthroughs was when I changed my mindset from "This system is stupid and I'm going to spend all my energy fighting it." to "Even though this system is stupid, I'm going to operate within it to my advantage." Much better results, way less stress.

It feels like the technology arms race between candidates and recruiters is accelerating. I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of companies (especially smaller ones) stop allowing direct applications and instead source 100% of candidates from warm intros. blog.daviddodda.com/how-i-automa...

Indie hacking has always been this way. Sharing what you’re building is great, but time spent posting about your MRR is time not spent talking to customers or building your product. It’s all masturbatory. Just build.

I think I inadvertently followed the wrong people on here because my feed has been full of pro-murder “revolution” nonsense for days. Like there’s no amount of blocking or muting that can stop it. I keep waiting for it to burn off but it hasn’t happened yet.

if you're a tech journalist in the present climate, it's incumbent upon you to ask why big tech is pursuing dead ends like AI when they could just start using the number 2. ones and zeroes have taken us as far as they can. either chuck a few 2s in there or cede the future of tech to those who will

Finding founding engineers is hard. Really hard. It’s tough to find someone with the combination of skill and appetite for risk, who also doesn’t want to try to start their own thing. (For clarity, I’m offering at- or above-market comp in both salary and equity.)

Yeah, I’m not sure how sophisticated this survey was. Anecdotally, lots of zoomers I’ve interacted with had very weird ideas about money, but then I’m not really close with any of them

instead of scolding young people into having kids, try telling them that someday a crying baby turns into an eight year old full of wonder, and you will get to see art (or baseball games, or video games, or whatever you love) anew through their huge excited eyes

Good to see you again! My experience is similar. I gave Twitter one last chance, even buying premium to see if no ads would help. It’s too far gone to be salvaged at this point. Not only is it a cesspool, it’s full of people who know they’re swimming in a cesspool and want to continue doing so.

I've tried to convince people that understanding and managing coupling is the most important part of software design -- it's the reason why I've built several DI frameworks throughout my career. It's tough to imagine 300+ pages on the subject though :)

Kind of surprising to see all of JetBrains' revenue here, especially marked back to 2022. AFAIK their products didn't have any AI features until December 2023.

It seems like a good litmus test of someone's experience with software is whether they refer to people who build software as "developers" (or "engineers") or as "coders".

Nate Kohari @nate.io · 01/12/2024
It's definitely a hard time to start a career in software! It just seems much more related to the macroeconomic environment (eg. end of ZIRP) than to AI. Companies got really over-bloated during the ZIRP era, and I think the surge of recent layoffs are more of a return to the mean than anything.

Joomla is a framework, not a language, and Perl is spelled as such Again it’s great to be excited about the possibilities for AI, but expecting (or hoping) that it’ll replace engineers is a result of being under-informed

You really don’t. You might think you do, but what I’m saying is you don’t know what you don’t know. It’s great to be excited by new tech but it’s just another tool. The industry has gone through several of these phases already (internet, web, mobile, social, document dbs, etc)

AI will obviously have an impact, but software engineering as a profession isn’t going anywhere. Architecture and maintenance remain the biggest challenges and AI models aren’t useful there. (For context, I’ve been an engineer for 20 years and am currently building a company around AI.)
