Defining Preprints and Preprint Servers: Mapping an Inconsistent Landscape

I’m deeply grateful to the editors and reviewers at @estsjournal.bsky.social. This paper’s long journey from preprint to journal publication is a reminder of why preprints matter—they let ideas circulate while peer review unfolds. 3/

Many of you may have read our 2024 preprint, “Does It Feel Like a Scientific Paper?” The version published in ESTS builds on that work by placing moderators’ judgments within broader questions of valuation, legitimacy, and boundary-making in scholarly communication. 2/

@katiecorker.bsky.social thanks for highlighting our work! We're now running a series of follow-up studies—looking at how moderation shapes trust among editors/authors, how preprint certification is developing and how funder mandates intersect with preprint integrity/transparency. So good: "Metascience...has progressively developed ways to study studies – towards the fundamentally metaphysical assertion that SCIENCE == REPLICATION. This isn’t metascience, it’s metapositivism: taking the exact same self-confident methodology and unreflective ontology up [a] level."

I've seen some talk about how we are witnessing the end of the professoriate as we know it and this may be true, but I think it's bigger: it's the decimation of the mission-oriented profession. Want to make a middle-class living serving the public good? Capitalism doesn't want that for you.

10/10 Do better, @nytimes.com. Journalism should scrutinize power, not launder its talking points through bootlicking.

9/10 What’s needed from journalism right now isn’t performative neutrality. It’s the spine to call things what they are. These cuts restrict scientific inquiry, silence marginalized communities, and weaken the foundation of public-interest research.

Natascha Chtena @nataschachtena.bsky.social · 27/06/2025
8/10 And it gets worse: Toward the end, Kitroeff asks whether the Trump administration might actually be right about the cuts. That is NOT journalistic curiosity and it isn't balance. It's legitimizing a political narrative that dismisses entire fields of research as “woke” or wasteful.

Natascha Chtena @nataschachtena.bsky.social · 27/06/2025
7/10 Researchers aren’t political operatives—they ask hard questions, often in uncomfortable places. To survive by appeasement is to lose the point of inquiry entirely.

Natascha Chtena @nataschachtena.bsky.social · 27/06/2025
6/10 At one point, Kitroeff even asks whether scientists could “change the way they pitch their research” to better align with the administration’s priorities. This is a dangerous suggestion: that scientific research should adapt itself to authoritarian preferences to survive.

5/10 Bisexual people face some of the highest rates of sexual violence—61% of bisexual women have experienced intimate partner rape, stalking, or abuse. That’s not a "niche" topic. It's a public health issue, no qualifiers needed.

Natascha Chtena @nataschachtena.bsky.social · 27/06/2025
4/10 Kitroeff also questions whether taxpayer dollars should fund research on sexual violence against bisexual individuals. That framing is deeply troubling.

3/10 You don’t get breakthroughs in public health, behavioral science, or pharmacology by studying “people in general.” You study specifics. Margins. Edge cases. Subpopulations.

2/10 Kitroeff refers to several terminated NIH grants as “niche,” implying their specificity undermines their value. But research is niche by design. That’s how progress happens.

🧵 1/10 What the hell kind of interview was that today on The Daily @nytimes.com? Instead of showing how harmful the NIH grant cuts are to U.S. science and public health, Natalie Kitroeff spent the episode validating the logic behind them.

So many Long Covid patients suffer in silence, dismissed by doctors or left to navigate life-destroying symptoms alone. Odine refused to accept that abandonment as normal. She fought for answers, for dignity, for care. Her work made so many feel less alone, and her loss is deeply felt.

4/5 Being able to read or reuse research isn’t the same as being able to contribute to it—or shape the systems that govern it. As governments question the value of inclusion, it’s urgent we ask who Open Science is for—and who gets to shape it.

3/5 That is, inclusion is often treated as secondary—something that might follow from openness, rather than something requiring its own commitments and actions. Publics are named, but rarely centered. Our findings suggest that without more intentional policy, this won’t change.

Infrastructure is often treated as peripheral to the politics of knowledge production—something technical, backgrounded, assumed. But when systems falter or access disappears, those assumptions start to show. We’re seeing that play out in real time.

We don’t talk about this enough. Openness doesn’t guarantee permanence. Repositories go dark, policies change, governments shift. Sometimes, access is quietly rolled back, as we saw with coronavirus-related research. Other times, the rollback is loud and deliberate, as we are seeing in the U.S. now.
