this is the thing. it's not nothing. in certain contexts it is really extraordinary, I am excited to be living to see what it does. it's also not erm <checks notes> going to be god-level general intelligence in two years time (or probably ever).

Today was one of those Good Days in Academia where (a) an experiment gave me a result I was hoping for, which is Super Cool, and (b) an undergrad emailed asking for advice and I could give them resources and context to point them on the next step of their journey. Little important wins 🩷

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

My daughter messaged me after her chem class the other day and asked if i could do a cartoon about Trump and Musk as isomers. Dear followers, inspired by Amelia i present to you, unconstitutional arsomers. *insert applause here* #chemsky
Two isomers of hexane are shown - 2,2-dimethyl butane and 2,3-dimethyl butane. They are labelled as constitutional isomers.

Cartoon showing 2 x arsole molecules. The first looks like elon and is doing a nazi salute. It has a methyl group at the 3-position. The second arsole has a red tie, is gesticulating, is orange with a big combover. Face set with a scowel. It has a methl group at the 2-position. They are labelled as unconstitutional arsomers.

In early phase drug discovery, biology and assays are make-or-break. I can remember very few programs I worked on which were hampered by the inability to make molecules, but plenty that were hampered by the inability to capture disease biology complexity on a chip or in an enzyme readout.

Well, there’s a story.
When Nazi Germany invaded Denmark in World War II, the Hungarian chemist George de Hevesy dissolved the gold Nobel Prizes of Max von Laue and James Franck in aqua regia to prevent the Nazis from stealing them. He placed the resulting solution on a shelf in his laboratory at the Niels Bohr Institute. After the war, he returned to find the solution undisturbed and precipitated the gold out of the acid. The Nobel Society then recast the Nobel Prizes using the original gold.
