#Birds Rob Crank Photography @robcrank68.bsky.social says today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #WingsOpenNotFlying, birds with their wings open when not flying. The Alt theme is #Blue. This Mallard drake with wings open, displaying a band of blue qualifies for a twofer I think.
A duck with its back to the camera, rearing up out of the water, has its wings spread wide open. While mostly brown, the secondary flight feathers are a deep royal blue edged with white.

4 October 1825: back in Lyme Regis after a tour of SW England, geologist Roderick Murchison noted in his journal, 'Accompanied by Mary Anning rode to Dowlands & dismounted there'. They spent the day exploring the geology of the landslipped cliffs and foreshore to the west of Lyme.

3 October 1848: the 36th day of the sale of the Duke of Buckingham's possessions, including the holotype of Plesiosaurus dolichodeirus found by Mary Anning in 1823 and which she had sold to the Duke for £110 in 1824. At the sale William Buckland bought it for the British Museum for just 8 guineas.
Left, extract of William Buckland's letter to Charles Konig at the British Museum telling him that he had just bought Plesiosaurus dolichodeirus and was sending it to him at the British Museum 'The Duke gave for it £100 & I have bought it for the Brit Museum at £8-8-0'; top right, the specimen itself, in the Natural History Museum; bottom right, extract from the Stowe sale catalogue describing the specimen: '... The discovery of this curious petrifaction was one of the results of the celebrated Miss Anning's explorations.'

The timeless beauty of ancient glass! This Roman glass scent bottle is around 2,000 years old, yet its elegant design feels surprisingly modern! British Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a small Roman scent bottle made of cobalt-blue mould-blown glass in the form of a scallop shell. At the top it has a cylindrical neck with an out-turned rim. There is a thin, curved, handle either side of the neck. The top of each handle is attached to the neck, and the bottom is attached to the top of the scallop shell. Bottle dimensions: height 8.5 cm, diameter 5.2 cm. Dated AD 25-100. It is displayed on a circular, clear perspex (?) stand in a British Museum display case. The bottle was bequeathed to the British Museum by Felix Slade in 1869.

#NationalPoetryDay: 'To Mary Anning' by John Kenyon (1784–1856), written after he met her in Lyme Regis in the autumn of 1836 and published in his 'Poems for the most part occasional' (1838). More recently, Mary Anning has featured in the work of at least nine modern poets.
