Jesus Christ: after a recent ruling by the Eighth Circuit that allowed Act 372 to take effect, an Arkansas county has banned all children from checking out any books in the adult section, bringing home any DVDs, or using the self-checkout kiosk in its public libraries.
More recently in Craighead County — symbolically, at least, Ground Zero for the state’s attack on libraries, thanks to Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Jonesboro) — the library announced several changes to circulation as it relates to minors. In a Facebook post, the library listed a number of changes to library policies, including:

Minors are prohibited from using the self-checkout kiosks;
Children under 13 years old may only check out materials from the designated children’s collection, while minors age 13-17 can only check out from the children or teen sections;
Minors may not check out DVDs at all; and
Minors are prohibited from entering or purchasing anything from the Friends of the Library Bookstore.

An entirely preventable tragedy, brought by Donald Trump and the men around him who neither understood how things worked, nor would take "no" for an answer. Thank you to my @thexylom.com colleagues for going all the way to Mozambique to bring this important story back home.
A major public health concern in Africa, trachoma is a contagious eye disease caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Though treatable in its early stages, repeated infections can turn the eyelids inward — a condition called trichiasis — causing the eyelashes to scrape the eyeballs and potentially leading to blindness if left untreated.

In 1998, health ministers at the World Health Assembly set a goal to eliminate blinding trachoma as a public health problem by 2020, The Guardian reported. In 2013, Mozambique became the first country where the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.K.’s Department for International Development (DfID) jointly supported nationwide trachoma mapping efforts.

The Trump administration’s freeze of USAID-funded programmes and subsequent gutting of the agency in 2025 put Mozambique in a bind when it comes to neglected tropical diseases, says Mouzinho Saide, the country’s former deputy minister of health and now the director general of Hospital Central de Maputo, Mozambique's largest public referral hospital.

The network of community health workers who track cases and distribute medicines for trachoma, lymphatic filariasis, and schistosomiasis has been disrupted. “Without them receiving salaries anymore, years of thorough field tracking are going to waste in months,” Saide said.

Developing countries such as Mozambique stockpile medicines in warehouses. When funding is cut, supply chains and local distribution networks can falter, leaving the medicines to expire on shelves. “With neglected tropical diseases, if you jump one treatment cycle, transmission resurfaces, and you are ten years back in progress due to aid cuts,” he added.

Different organizations in Mozambique are racing to ink new agreements with the U.S. government, which has transitioned to an 'America First Global Health Strategy'. While the U.S. touts this as self-reliance building, Saide is skeptical and worried.

For Mozambique, “the reali…

ABSTRACT
The city of Atlanta is well known for its corporate-led white–Black urban regime and the ‘Atlanta Way,’ an approach that neglects the city’s low-income residents. Under Mayor Andre Dickens, the city made some changes in affordable housing policy, including standing up a new social housing developer and implementing a housing trust fund. National media and think tanks have praised the Dickens Administration for these efforts. Because affordable housing is a key component of equitable urban policy and planning, do such efforts signal a ‘beginning of the end’ of the Atlanta Way? Unfortunately, I find that the answer is no. I argue that these somewhat stronger affordable housing efforts do not constitute any sort of paradigm shift. The city has yet to address the undertaxation of commercial real estate, leaving it unable to capture a sufficient share of the growth in land values for more equitable development, and it has failed to devote sufficient resources towards deeply affordable housing for the lowest-income Atlantans. Moreover, the city derailed a referendum on its Cop City project, a major investment in policing favored by corporate interests. In the end, the Atlanta Way still seems to be very much alive.
