the DOJ is moving ~400 people detained pretrial (not convicted of anything!) from a jail outside Atlanta (where their cases will be heard) 200 miles away to the infamous Irwin Detention Center where detained migrants were given nonconsensual hysterectomies. It was shut down, and then reopened by ICE

the prosecutor in the execution that was just stayed is really saying the quiet part out loud about what the common threads of landing on death row are -- these things are exactly what the Survivor Justice Act are meant to respond to!

wow wow wow — the execution of Stacey Humphreys has been STAYED in Georgia because a judge ruled that he was due a hearing under the Survivor Justice Act, which allows the abuse a person has suffered to be considered in their sentencing. Mr Humphrey was horribly abused as a kid.

Georgia is set to execute a man named Stacey Humphreys in 3 days. 11 of his jurors voted for life without parole; the one holdout altered the foreperson’s note to the judge to hide the deadlock (!!) - because under Georgia law, a deadlock in a capital case automatically means a life sentence.

Thanks for this thread Hannah. I wrote about his case in Dec in the context of the clemency issues and mentioned some of the juror misconduct, but eventually lost the thread. (One challenge is how fast GA executions happen once a date is set, within weeks, which makes in-depth coverage even harder.)

Georgia is executing Stacey Humphreys on Wednesday and I can't believe how little coverage the case is getting. The whole legal commentariat weighed in on what happens when a juror didn't follow the rules in the Clancy trial, meanwhile GA is about to kill someone whose juror did the same & MUCH more

Autopsies of Black Lives Matter and George Floyd protests often conclude that movements produced tough-on-crime backlash. My new study in Work and Occupations finds a different kind of movement outcome: BLM changed how local reporters cover cops and jails. 🧵 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
Beyond Police Stenography: How Disembedding Enables Critical Crime News Work

Prior research finds that crime journalists reproduced criminal justice organization standpoints through close working relationships with law enforcement. How do crime reporters relate to police sources today? Drawing on interviews with 58 journalists across 40 local newsrooms in 24 U.S. states, I find that disembedding from law enforcement organizations restructures many reporters’ source relationships, creating conditions under which some journalists enact a distinct professional identity through occupational activism. I argue that the critical crime journalist role is distinguished by a commitment to alternative sourcing practices, structural framing, and reinterpreted objectivity. Informants connect critical orientations to repeated exposure to official dishonesty and the influence of Black-led social movements against police violence. Critical crime journalists amplify civilian and prisoner voices and engage in contextual reporting, treating coverage as a vehicle to shift how readers understand criminalized people and the criminal justice system more broadly. These findings extend scholarship on occupational activism into crime journalism and identify pathways into this form of empirical and expressive occupational activism.
