Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

I think it's important to note Schmitt has staff he relies on from both his personal office as well as the well-staffed Committee's majority office. This *big-Hawks-game-plan* had to have gone through a dozen people first and no one caught it as being, well, the dumbest god damn thing of all time.

I really hope people understand that stories like this are not anomalies or “mistakes.” They’re not the result of hospitals misunderstanding the law or legislative growing pains. This is simply what happens when you allow the government to interfere in pregnancy.

The worst part of Bonta caving on the Paramount merger is that it's a big flashing signal to every other company that there is no antitrust enforcement in America and you can bully your way into getting whatever you want. It's a monumentally bad decision.

One thing they teach in nursing school is when your patient is being questioned by police, to step in with "that's enough for today, he needs to rest" right after he gives a key piece of information, but one sentence short of him telling the whole story.

Conservatives have a major political interest in rejecting Lindsay Clancy’s legal defense. If they concede postpartum psychosis is real, they’ll also have to admit that pregnancy and childbirth are dangerous for women’s mental health. And that could take down their abortion politics entirely

Even if people aren’t going to jump onboard the far-right extremism train right away, they become more conditioned to the idea that feminists are crazy and these radical bigots are right on this issue, so maybe they’re right in other ways, too. After all, feminists support killing kids, right?

The right-wing organizing around the Lindsay Clancy trial is growing and it’s frightening. A lot of people overlook these culture wars revolving around women’s issues, because, well, they’re women’s issues. But the right doesn’t. It’s how they regained such a massive cultural foothold.

My agent's Steinem tribute.
"I owe my entire career to an internship at Ms. Magazine in 2000. At the time, Ms. was still headquartered in NYC in the financial district near the World Trade Center. 20 Exchange Pl was a strange address for a non-profit feminist news magazine, and I loved the juxtaposition of this all-woman staff mixing in with the Wall St blowhards, especially then, when you might wander into an unassuming pub for lunch in the neighborhood and be the only woman in there. Gloria Steinem was at large, but still attended Ms. editorial meetings when she could. It was the time of the chauffeured town car as the preferred method of transportation for fancy publishing people, and I remember being blown away that she preferred the subway. Her parties were legendary, her apartment always teeming with the most diverse array of thinkers, makers, doers, activists, writers, and she was brilliant at making each person feel heard. She was remarkably casual when it came to house guests perched on her bed to get a better view of her legendary built-in bookshelves. I once watched her give away a leather patchwork skirt from the 70s to someone who complimented it. In editorial meetings, she insisted that interns had a literal seat at the table and got equal time to weigh in. These meetings were full of passionate debate. Our ideas were always welcome because we were young and had different perspectives, which was Gloria’s favorite thing. She always emphasized the importance of the next generation. Progress, intersectionality, mainstreaming the message that women are people and equality is an inherent human right. She loved people, men included. When I think of Gloria, I will remember her joy first and foremost, her creativity and style, her bon mots, her ability to bring out the best in people and challenge them, her writing, her listening, her advocacy, her warmth. Thanks for teaching us how to use the F-word, Ms. Steinem. I’ve been saying it with my whole chest ever since."

Gloria Steinem taught America that sexism is a symptom of a system that can be changed.

From the fight for equal pay to abortion access and political representation, she showed that progress comes when people organize, build power and refuse to accept inequality as inevitable.

She staged protests, established domestic violence shelters, created a magazine owned and operated entirely by women and helped build a movement that fundamentally changed this country.

Her legacy is the millions of people she inspired to believe that a more just world was possible.

She lived in New York for 70 years. We were lucky to have her. We mourn her loss and will carry her work forward.
