History is written by the victors. Thatcher broke the power of trade unions by mass unemployment, industrial restructuring, frittered away N Sea Oil, laid the foundations for the current housing crisis, decimated local bus services, hollowed out local government and introduced the poll tax.
Simon Clarke

Andy Burnham seems to remember a different 1970s to the rest of us. Britain in 1979 was utterly broken - ravaged by unaccountable trade union power, economically stagnant, the sick man of Europe.
The 1980s saw a remarkable national recovery based on free enterprise, the rule of law and championing Western values. And it is this that our Prime Minister rails against...

So I leave and the men assume I'm tired or dull or maybe they don't care bc without me, they don't have to confront the creeps, they can claim ignorance and buy the bar another round.

That’s because the decision has already been made. The issue being debated is merely the post-hoc justification. Where decisions happen and where debate happens are different places. The idea that debate leads to policy outcomes is a fiction designed to create an impression of democratic consent.

To me, that pattern strongly suggests a link to infectious diseases, which were greatly reduced in Australia in the early pandemic years. Then, after #LetItRip, it seems COVID combined with the return of other diseases has either "made up for lost time" or possibly accelerated the trend.
